Guwahati, Dec 12 (IANS) Bomb threats were received at the Guwahati railway station and seven different spots in the Gauhati University campus area on Thursday, the police said.
A police officer said that immediately after the information received from the Shillong police control room, sleuths of Assam police started investigation both in the Guwahati railway station and different places of the Gauhati University campus but till late evening nothing, found from any places.
"We have received information from the Shillong control room of Meghalaya Police stating that a bomb might be planted at the Guwahati railway station in Paltan Bazar. Accordingly, several police teams utilising sniffer dogs and bomb detection equipment started the investigation in the suspected places but nothing found yet," the official told the media.
He said that the Assam Police also received an anonymous email claiming that bombs might be planted at seven locations on the Gauhati University campus.
The Assam Police conducted a search and sanitisation operation at the varsity campus, while a similar search operation was conducted at the Guwahati railway station by the Assam police along with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF).
The police could not immediately confirm whether the threats were linked with the banned militant outfits like ULFA (I).
Senior police officials are investigating the matter to find out the details.
"After a meticulous search by all concerned agencies, nothing suspicious was detected in any of the places, and all police agencies involved in the bomb detection operation have been alerted," another police official said.
He said that the bomb threats might be a false alarm.
A railway official said that the cell number of the caller has been identified, and further investigation is going on.
"We cannot divulge anything more at this moment," the official said.
