As PM Narendra Modi Takes Oath, Mother Heeraben Modi Watches Swearing-In Ceremony From Hundreds Of Miles Away

Darpan News Desk IANS, 30 May, 2019 07:16 PM

Narendra Modi's mother Heeraben was visibly overwhelmed with emotion as she watched on TV the swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday.

Watching the live telecast on television at her house in Gandhinagar, Heeraben Modi clapped as President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to Narendra Modi.

After leading the Bharatiya Janata Party to a massive victory in the Lok Sabha elections, Narendra Modi had met his nonagenarian mother Heeraben and sought her blessings.

The PM’s mother stays with his younger brother in Raisan, Ahmedabad.

After taking his oath, PM Modi has now become the third prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi to return for a second successive term with a full majority.

While his first term as the PM was about “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”, in an address to the newly elected NDA MPs at the Central Hall of the Parliament, Modi added "sabka vishwas" which is seen as an effort to reach out to minority and marginal communities.

President Ram Nath Kovind was administered the oath of office and secrecy to the PM at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Around 8,000 guests are present at the ceremony including top Opposition leaders like former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, corporate bigwigs, film stars, chief ministers and leaders from BIMSTEC countries.

In 2014, Modi was sworn in by the then President Pranab Mukherjee in the presence of over 3,500 guests including the heads of SAARC countries.

Apart from PM Modi, Chandra Shekhar in 1990 and Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999 were also sworn-in at the historic forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Leaders of BIMSTEC countries including President of Bangladesh Abdul Hamid, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, President of Myanmar U Win Myint and Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering are also present at the gala event.
