55-Yr-Old Canadian NRI's Body Found With Hand And Feet Chopped Off In Punjab

Darpan News Desk IANS, 13 May, 2017 12:56 PM
The mutilated body of an NRI was found from near a nullah close to Mauli Baidwan village. Parts of the body were found chopped off. The victim’s hands had been tied behind his back. The body was in a bloated condition and was emitting foul smell. It was covered with a sheet of synthetic packing  material. Police rounded up two persons, including a woman, in connection with the case.

Late in the evening, the police identified the victim as Surjit Singh, a resident of Sector 71 here.

Police sources said that Surjeet Singh was a Canadian citizen and his family lived in Canada while he stayed in Mohali and used to visit his native village sometimes. Surjeet was in touch with a local woman who was rounded up late in the evening. The police also rounded up a man said to be the woman’s friend.

“We suspect that he was murdered for money by the woman and one of her accomplices. Our investigation is at an advanced stage and we will soon crack the case,” a senior police officer told. Sources said that the woman had called Surjeet on the day he went missing.

The victim had been missing from his house for several days. The body was spotted by a passerby, who informed the sarpanch of the village. The sarpanch then passed on the information to the police.

The police reached the spot and took the body in their possession, which was later sent to the Civil Hospital in Phase VI here.

Among the theories the police are working on is that it could be a case of old enmity or  alleged illicit relations.

The police registered a murder case against unknown persons on the complaint of Surjeet’s brother-in-law who said that the victim had been missing for the last five days. They did not lodge any complaint as Surjeet used to go to his village for staying there or to meet his friends.
