Stephen Harper To Meet Hemispheric Leaders In Panama At The Summit Of The Americas

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 09 Apr, 2015 12:05 PM
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper will meet with the Western hemisphere's leaders this weekend when he travels to Panama for the Summit of the Americas.

Harper will be among the leaders of 35 countries including Cuba, which has been invited to attend the summit for the first time since the event was created 20 years ago.

All eyes will be on the historic meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro.

Obama and Castro will meet for the first time since the old Cold War foes announced in December they would try to normalize diplomatic relations after the 53-year U.S. embargo.

Harper is scheduled to have bilateral talks with key partners at the two-day summit that begins Friday in Panama City.

He's also scheduled to outline Canada's objectives for the Americas in an address and host a reception Saturday night for this summer's Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, which will be held in the Toronto area.
