Sex, flying most sought-after dreams

Darpan News Desk IANS, 11 Jul, 2014 02:34 PM
So what dream did you have last night? Do not mumble as lucid dreamers, people who are aware to a certain extent what they are dreaming, go through two most frequent dreaming experiences - sex and trying to fly.

"Lucid dreamers are likely to accomplish different actions such as flying, talking with dream characters or sex, yet they are not always able to remember their intentions and successfully execute them," researchers said.

Of all waking intentions, flying was the most popular one.

During the study, researchers asked 570 people what they have dreamt about.

They also asked the participants which activities they decided - when they were awake - to try to do in their dreams.

Participants wanted to try things like flying, having sex, breathing under water, talking with animals, being someone else and time travel, researchers found.

Some lucid dreamers also dreamt about aggressive actions such as fighting, killing and robbery.

"The frequency of lucid dreaming drops at about age 16. It suggests that lucid dreaming might be a natural phenomenon occurring in a developing brain, but could be lost in adulthood," researchers emphasised.

Tapping into lucid dreaming could be helpful in treating psychological problems such as frequent nightmares or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), concluded the study published in the American Journal of Psychology.
