Public Health Agency Says 14 Travel-Related Cases Of Zika Virus In Canada

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 26 Feb, 2016 11:42 AM
The Public Health Agency of Canada is reporting 14 cases of Zika virus in the country.

The latest confirmed case is in Saskatchewan and other cases have been confirmed in Ontario, Alberta and B.C.

The agency said Thursday on its website that all of the cases are travel-related and the types of mosquitoes that transmit the virus are not found in Canada.

No details on the cases were released.

The Alberta Health website says there have been four lab-confirmed cases in the province — three this year and one in 2013.

There has been an explosion of Zika infections in South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean since last May.

Most people who contract the infection have no symptoms, but the virus has been potentially linked in Brazil to cases of abnormally small heads in infants born to women who may have been infected while pregnant.
