Calgary man who taped dog, cat to receive psych assessment before sentencing

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 18 Dec, 2014 12:36 PM

CALGARY — A Calgary man who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges for taping shut the mouths of a dog and cat will remain in custody while he undergoes a psychiatric assessment.

Nicolino Camardi has been in custody since he was arrested in May.

Camardi's lawyer says his client has already served enough time and opposed a psychiatric evaluation prior to sentencing.

The judge, however, disagreed and ordered the assessment.

Sentencing arguments are scheduled for Feb. 26.

The Crown has indicated it will be asking for a sentence in excess of two years.

The animals, who were found in an alley last January, had both been strangled, beaten and starved.
