Liberal candidate resignation 'failure': Horgan

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 16 Oct, 2020 07:46 PM
  • Liberal candidate resignation 'failure': Horgan

New Democrat Leader John Horgan says the resignation of Liberal candidate Laurie Throness for his inappropriate comments represents a failure of Liberal party leadership.

Horgan says the resignation also raises questions about the views of other Liberal candidates in the Oct. 24 election who have been linked to anti-LGBTQ statements.

Throness quit as the party's candidate in Chilliwack-Kent after the NDP released a video of an all-candidates meeting where he said the NDP promise to provide free contraceptives appears similar to past eugenics plans to stop poor people from having more children.

Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson said in a statement he accepted the resignation after Throness agreed his comments were wrong and inappropriate.

At a campaign event today in Pitt Meadows, Horgan says voters will now be questioning other Liberal candidates who hold inappropriate views.

Horgan says his NDP platform promises will save an average family $3,400 a year and includes the $1,000 pandemic recovery benefit, $10-a-day child care and cutting ICBC rates by $400.
