  • Kamala Harris becomes the first woman of South Asian and Black heritage to become Vice President of the United States

The glass ceiling has been shattered as former Senator Kamala Harris has made history by becoming the first female Vice President of the US. The 56 year old VP elect is of Black and South Asian heritage.

She took to Twitter on her game changing win. A woman has never served as president or vice president in the United States.

She also congratulated Biden on his win via video message on Twitter acknowledging that their hardwork paid off.

The Democratic and Republican campaigns wrapped up Saturday, five days after election night, after Biden secured major victories over Trump in the battleground states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Biden had a healthy lead of 294 votes when only 270 are needed for a win and Trump was at 214 votes.

Former Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton who ran against fomer US President Donald Trump in 2016 also shared a message via Twitter.

The Premier of BC John Horgan and the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau both congratulated Harris and Biden on their win.

VP elect Kamala Harris spoke boldly outside the Chase Center Saturday evening to a cheering crowd of thousands of people about a new era is on the horizon and the gates of opportunities have flooded open for young girls and women that you can chase your dreams and make them come true. She also credited her mother and spoke of her being in the US with dreams of her own at 19.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke of a new era in his tweet with Harris getting elected to office.

Harris was born in Oakland, California. She is the daughter of two immigrants. Her mother, Shymala Gopalan-Harris — a cancer researcher — was born in India. Her father, Donald Harris, immigrated to the U.S. from Jamaica to study economics.
