Gang crime on the rise, BC Liberals will pause Surrey police transition in first 60 days, focus on safer streets

Darpan News Desk BC Liberals, 20 Oct, 2020 10:24 PM
  • Gang crime on the rise, BC Liberals will pause Surrey police transition in first 60 days, focus on safer streets

Surrey BC Liberal candidates are firmly focused on safer streets, and promising residents full transparency and a binding referendum on whether they want the RCMP or a Surrey Police Force.

“A BC Liberal government would pause the rushed process that has not been open or transparent. There must be full public disclosure of all costs associated with the transition, and specific details of what police services residents will get so that they can decide if they want the RCMP or a new force. “At a time when gang wars are on the rise, we need to be totally focused on fighting crime, not a risky transition of police services”.

"This decision is one that cannot be taken lightly. The issue of policing is not simply a change in uniforms and vehicles. It rests at the core of public safety across the Lower Mainland. We have seen an increase in crime and gang violence, and public concern cannot be brushed off. This is not just a matter of dollars and cents, it’s a matter of public confidence in Surrey so that people can feel safe and protected in their own communities”.

“Surrey can’t afford to get this wrong as the consequences will affect not only the people of Surrey, but all of the Lower Mainland. “Within the first 60 days of taking office, the BC Liberals will publish the referendum question and the date for a binding referendum. “The people of Surrey have asked for this, and they deserve no less.”
