  • Brenda Locke defeats Doug McCallum and becomes the new mayor of Surrey

Brenda Locke with Surrey Connect has been declared as the new Mayor of Surrey.

She led the current incumbent Mayor Doug McCallum with over 30 percent of the votes.

Former Liberal MLA and MP Gordie Hogg was in a close third with about 23.3 per cent of the vote.

NDP MLA and former MP Jinny Sims, and Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal  candidates who entered the race against McCallum – came in fourth and fifth place.

Locke once an ally of McCallum abandoned the Safe Surrey Coalition over issues of transparency and divisiveness.

Her election promises include restoring ethics at City Hall, prioritizing public safety, and keeping the RCMP in Surrey.

Brenda Locke, a member of Surrey council and a former B.C. Liberal member of the legislature in her victory speech included a pledge to keep the RCMP in Surrey despite McCallum's initiative to replace the Mounties with a civic police force. "We need to keep the Surrey RCMP right here in Surrey," she said.

In Surrey, incumbent Mayor Doug McCallum is facing consecutive challenges, first at the ballot box against seven other candidates, then in court on Oct. 31 as he faces trial on a charge of public mischief.
