Wedding Story: Rajveer & Gagan

Darpan News Desk, 20 Jul, 2019

"It felt like something very divine bonded us together forever and made me realize the power of God and how sacred a bond like marriage is."

    Q: How did you meet?

We were originally introduced through family friends. Raj reached out to me and we began talking more frequently as time passed. Raj would come down to Calgary often to visit. We formed a very strong relationship and knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. Soon after we were engaged!

Q: What do you love most about one another?

Gagan: I love the joyful child-like spirit of Raj the most. Whatever he loves in his life, he loves it with his whole heart. He inspires me so much as how to enjoy every bit of your life.

Rajveer: I love how intelligent Gagan is; she always has a fresh perspective. She is so practical in her thinking when it comes to decision-making and it always makes me feel safe that whenever we take decisions together, they will be made with clarity and focus.

Q: Could you share your proposal story?

Gagan: Raj flew to Calgary to surprise me for Valentine’s Day last year. He was waiting for me as I walked out of class with roses – I was very surprised to see him. We then went to his hotel and he had made a heart with rose petals, and it said ‘Marry me?’. He got down on one knee and the rest is history!

Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment?

Gagan: Our wedding was held in Calgary on a very rainy day – it’s supposed to be good luck right? My favourite part was when we were having our Lavan. It felt like something very divine bonded us together forever and made me realize the power of God and how sacred a bond like marriage is.

Rajveer: My favourite part was of course, marrying Gagan. The wedding week was amazing and I really enjoyed spending time with family and friends that I otherwise don’t see as much. One of the highlights for me was after our wedding ceremony, when we got to relax and take photos with the bridal party.

Q: Could you tell us about your reception?

Gagan: Our reception was held in the Okanagan two days after our wedding ceremony. After a week of events and travelling back and forth from Calgary, we were ready to unwind! The venue was decorated beautifully and the food was great. Raj and I did a choreographed first dance to ‘A Thousand Years’ by Christina Perry. We danced the night away with our family and friends!

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

Gagan: I wore a burgundy velvet lengha paired with a watermelon-coloured dupatta on our wedding day. The entire outfit was beautifully embroidered with pastel colour threads. Raj wore an off-white embroidered sequin achkan paired with a burgundy velvet shawl. For the reception, I wore a light pink sequins-covered gown with matching jewellery. Raj wore a navy blue tuxedo with a white shirt, black tie and shoes that he got from Vegas while he was on his stag.

    Q: Where did you honeymoon?

We have actually travelled frequently to the U.S.A. and throughout Canada leading up to our wedding, so we decided to hold off, enjoy the summer in Kelowna and plan for a later moon. We have not made any decisions yet but we may make a trip to Europe possibly later this year.

Q: What are your goals as a couple?

Our goal is to help each other to become the best versions of ourselves, to realize our potential and achieve the heights of success in our respective fields. To always support each other through thick and thin, and face the hardships of life together. To make this world a better place for people who are less privileged.

Q: What are the strengths of your marriage?

We are always honest with each other and trust each other completely. We all have our differences but respecting them and understanding them to make things work is essential. Raj and I communicate and always remind each other how much we love each other.

Q: If you could provide any advice to other married couples, what would it be?

Always follow your heart. Make sure you enjoy and love the crazy and weird sides of your partner as well. A successful relationship is about compromise, if you are able to understand each other’s point of view, you will always be able to grow and work through life together.
