  • Wedding Story: Baltej & Kiran

Names of Groom/Bride: Baltej Sekhon & Kiran Grewal

City of Residence: Surrey & Burnaby

Q: How did you meet?

A: We met the new school way… Bumble!

Q: What do you love most about one another?

A: Baltej: There are endless things I love about Kiran. She cares about the fine details and makes a huge effort to always make everything perfect. She makes my life so much better in every way and always knows what I need. She gets excited about the smallest moments in life and always finds a way to celebrate them!

Kiran: I love how selfless Baltej is. He is always going above and beyond to help his family, friends, and sometimes even strangers he meets throughout the day! He is beyond caring and always puts his best effort into everything he does. I love seeing him succeed after all of the energy and efforts he puts into every aspect of life. It also helps that he always knows how to make me laugh!

Q: Could you share your proposal story?

A: Baltej proposed on the 3rd anniversary of our first date! The day felt significant from the moment I woke up and Baltej asked to take me out to get my nails done and then go for a nice dinner. We ended up driving around Stanley Park as it was a beautiful frosty, yet sunny winter day and I had no idea Baltej was stalling us for the perfect moment… he had been visiting places around Vancouver at various times of the day to gauge when the perfect moment would be. He then drove us to Ambleside Park, where we had the perfect backdrop of the Lions Gate Bridge, a setting winter sun, and lush greenery. It was a beautiful moment that was immediately followed with dainty snowflakes falling on us… as if the moment were meant to be. I would find out later during our wedding morning that Baltej had hired a secret photographer to capture the proposal!

Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment?

A: Our favourite moment from our wedding day was the feeling of peace and contentment after the fourth laavn. We both immediately felt a wave of calmness and oneness and it was a beautiful feeling to share for such a special day in our lives

Q: Could you tell us about your reception?

A: After months of planning the reception came together exactly how we had hoped it would. We greeted our guests for a cocktail hour. During our cocktail hour we also had a portrait style photobooth and fresh churros! We made our grand entrance as Mr. And Mrs. Sekhon to the song Jindua (the Snoop Dogg remix). The evening was full of heartfelt speeches from our siblings and friends, performances, and the wonderfully cinematic next-day-edit organized by A Master Media. We performed our first dance to A Whole New World which remixed into the song Sunoji Dulhan from the movie Hum Saath Saath Hain. It was the perfect evening full of delicious food, a great DJ, and dancing our hearts out with our close friends and family!

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

A: Kiran- My wedding outfit was designed by Tarun Tahiliani. Intricate detail, thread work, and 3D hand embroidery riddled the lehenga which was paired with a sweetheart neckline blouse and 2 dupattas, one draped across the front in a traditional style, and the second, a veil covering my head.  The veil was elegantly encrusted with crystals which shimmered while trailing behind me. My mother chose my wedding lehenga and she has always been my style icon so it was a moment I will forever cherish. My reception lehenga was also designed by Tarun Tahiliani. It was an elegant cream color with accents of pastel pink and pistachio in the border. The blouse had beaded detailing which flowed with the lakhnavi embroidery throughout the lehenga.

My wedding event jewelry was customized from our family jewelers in India. For my wedding day I wore a gold and polki tiered set, complete with hand pieces, a nath, tikka, and statement earrings. The most meaningful piece of jewelry I wore was my late grandmother’s karas with my choora. On the evening of the reception, I wore a gold meena kundan set complete with earrings and a tikka.

My pre-wedding event outfits were customized from boutiques in India and Phulkari by Patiala Fashions in Payal Business Center.

Baltej- My wedding achkan was designed by Anita Dongre. It was a pastel pistachio green color with green and cream embroidery embellishing the jacket. For the reception I wore a custom tuxedo by Jason Sarai. The entire experience of customizing the tuxedo was luxurious and tailored to my needs, which was exactly what I had hoped for!

Q: Where did you go for your honeymoon?

A: Since our wedding, we have been on a slew of “minimoons” including, San Fransisco, Napa, Los Angeles, and New York. We are planning our tropical romantic getaway for later this year!

Q: What are your goals as a couple?

A: Our goals are to continue building a strong relationship through open communication, emotional understanding, and mutual support. We want to push each other to do the best in our careers and reach new heights. Our most important goal is to always have fun and find joy in all the big and little moments in life.

Q: What are your favourite quotes?

A: Kiran: Ces’t la vie

Baltej: Be yourself, everyone else is already taken

Q: What are the strengths of your marriage?

A: Knowing we can rely on one another regardless of how difficult or strenuous any challenge is, but always remaining in high spirits and making each other laugh.

Q: If you could give any advice to other married couples, what would it be?

A: Our advice would be to be clear with your goals and wishes upfront and always remain open and honest with each other. Make time for each other, regardless of how busy life gets, and show appreciation for one another often.

Our wedding day was the most special day of our lives. We had our Anand Karaj at the sea-facing Gazebo at the Moon Palace, decorated with beautiful flowers and blush tones. The sea glistened as the sun shone brightly upon us, as though it was blessing us on our special day. My favourite part was when I caught a glimpse of Jaskeerat in her royal chariot.

Our wedding took place at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar in New Westminster. My favourite moment was the Anand Karaj ceremony itself. As I folded my hands in prayer and sat in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib, I was grateful to have shared in the warmth and love of Waheguruji's eternal embrace with all those present.
