1.     Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

My husband and I immigrated to Canada in 2019 for several reasons. Canada offers incredible opportunities for personal and professional growth with supportive social policies. Compared to Delhi, there's negligible pollution, plenty of open spaces, provincial parks, etc. The crime rate is not as alarming as that in India. We were also drawn to Canada's multicultural society, where diversity is celebrated. Overall, Canada felt like a decent place to build our future.

2.  Which year did you immigrate?

         November 2019

3.  What were your first impressions of Canada?

We were struck by the country's natural beauty and the multicultural atmosphere. The vibrant cities and well-organized communities made settling in exciting and  comfortable.

4.  Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friend's place?

     Air BNB

5. What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?

We moved around two months before COVID came in. Job opportunities were limited, and we could not travel back to India.

We also felt that career opportunities could be better here.

6. How long did it take to get used to the people, weather or the surroundings?

It took us a few months to understand cultural nuances, adjust to the climate (especially winters), and familiarize ourselves with the local communities and amenities. Over time, we grew more comfortable. We have a good social circle and live in a very friendly Burlington neighbourhood.

7. How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or difficult?

It took my husband almost a year to land a job. However, he managed to set up his business and did quite well in 2020 before he got a job. I continue to work on a contractual basis with an Indian company and have my own business in the events space in Canada. Our experience suggests that personal businesses are more rewarding than working at a corporation.

8.  What do you like and dislike most about this country?

It is a carefree society. The country's natural beauty and commitment to environmental sustainability are also impressive. As for dislikes, the cost of living in some areas can be high, which can be a consideration depending on the location.

9.  How do you see your future in Canada?

     Relaxed and rewarding

10.  How has your overall journey in Canada been so far?

It has been a mixed bag. Uprooting from your established work environment to create a new life in a new country is no easy task.

11.  Advice for immigrants:

Embrace diversity, network and connect, stay positive, learn some winter activities and sports to be able to enjoy the weather

When I first arrived in Vancouver in 1999, I was invited to be a part of a program at the University British Columbia; it was then that I decided to settle in the land where the ocean meets the mountains. Along with the welcoming members of the Indigenous community I met, the streets of UBC were breathtakingly beautiful at that time of the year – lined with Cherry blossoms all around. My first impression of this land was that it is filled with natural beauty, and with beautiful and kind people.

It took very little time to get use to the people as everyone is so friendly! We loved the weather. Summers are lovely, with plenty of outdoor activities like biking, hiking, and camping. When it's raining, we go to the recreation centre.
