  • Robin Thind : Field Hockey Prodigy

"Playing in the tournaments organized by our local clubs in Surrey gave me the incredible opportunity to play alongside Jeroen Hertzberger from the Netherlands. It was surreal passing the ball with one of the best forwards ever and learning from him on the field."-Field Hockey Player, Robin Thind

Robin was introduced to field hockey when he was three years old by his father and quickly showed promise by competing in under-12 teams at six. Despite his forays into basketball and ice hockey, which he continues to enjoy, Robin's commitment to field hockey deepened significantly by grade nine. His talent in field hockey is particularly striking; his ability to maintain possession and execute precision passes makes it seem like the ball is glued to his stick. His record of scoring four goals in four minutes at the Junior Pan Am Championship highlights his goal-scoring capabilities.

The support from his family has been a cornerstone of his success. His father has been a continual source of guidance and resources, helping to refine Robin's technical skills and mental fortitude. His mother's steadfast presence at every game ensures he has the emotional support necessary to excel.

As part of the under-21 Canadian team, Robin has ambitions of competing in the Junior World Cup in Belgium in 2025. He remains actively involved in local tournaments, which are a vital part of the sporting culture in Surrey. These events not only allow him to compete at a high level but also to connect with his community and other players from around the world.

The local clubs in Surrey have been instrumental in Robin's development, providing platforms that connect young talents with international stars. Speaking about the influence of these clubs, Robin shared an impactful experience: "Playing in the tournaments organized by our local clubs in Surrey gave me the incredible opportunity to play alongside Jeroen Hertzberger from the Netherlands. It was surreal passing the ball with one of the best forwards ever and learning from him on the field."

As Robin looks to the future, he aims to join the senior Canadian team and pursue a professional career in Europe, with aspirations to play in the Netherlands. His journey highlights the significant role that local sports clubs play in developing athletes and promoting field hockey in Canada.

Robin Thind's story reflects personal achievement and the importance of community support, family backing, and the vibrant local sports scene in nurturing young athletes. As he inspires the next generation and pursues excellence, his career shows how passion, backed by strong community and family support, can lead to international sports success.

What is one achievement you're proud of so far?

I'm proud of representing Canada in the Under-21 World Cup and the Junior Pan Am Championship in Barbados, where we finished second. In the first game of that tournament, I scored four goals in 4 minutes, setting a record.

What advice would you give young athletes who aspire to become professional field hockey players?

Keep working hard and start young. If you have natural talent, you'll recognize it early on. Stay dedicated and committed to your goals.

Who inspires you?

My father inspires me the most. He taught me the game from a young age and still coaches me. His guidance and support have been invaluable.

How many hours do you practice in a day?

I practice for at least 2 hours a day, but sometimes I can spend the entire day training.
