Who said going to the dentist can't be fun?

19 Jul, 2016

    Welcome to Smiletown Dentistry

“Many parents have told us how excited they are to have such a child friendly dental office open in their area and the children have really taken to our beautifully themed offices – Jungle, Beach and Underwater!” shares Dr. Karim Kanani (B.Sc., M.Sc., M.BS., DMD)

SmileTown Dentistry is not like other pediatric dental clinics around town. A child’s visit to SmileTown equals to a day at the aquarium, at a beach, or a zoo, filled with fun things to do and happy memories.

This playful effect has gotten the dental clinic a tremendous public response at all its three locations in North Delta/Surrey, Burnaby and Langley. “Many parents have told us how excited they are to have such a child friendly dental office open in their area and the children have really taken to our beautifully themed offices – Jungle, Beach and Underwater!” shares Dr. Karim Kanani (B.Sc., M.Sc., M.BS., DMD), who co-founded the dental clinics with Dr. Diya Chadha (BDS, DMD).

So what makes families visit the clinic time and again? “At SmileTown Dentistry, not only do children receive high quality dental care,” answers Dr. Chadha, “but the environment is specifically designed to put children at "ease and immerse them into a place of fun and excitement.”

Filled with televisions, gaming stations, and fun characters throughout the clinic, the environment guarantees that each child’s visit is enjoyable and carefree.

All the dentists at SmileTown Dentistry are well qualified to work with children of all ages including special needs children. Their highly-trained staff is very accommodating and always ensures that children, as well as parents, are comfortable and are provided the best patient experience possible. This also involves fully-trained multilingual staff that can communicate in English, Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu, short or no waitlists, and professional care.

“We offer many services that help children reduce their anxiety while providing a wonderful appointment. These services include, but are not limited to, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation and general anesthesia,” adds Dr. Kanani.

With summer around the corner, both doctors warn about dental trauma, especially among kids. Dental trauma means an injury to one's teeth that can also include nearby soft tissues such as the lips and tongue. “It is very important that children who are engaged in sporting activities invest in a mouth guard. Mouth guards should be used by anyone – children and adults – who play contact sports such as football, boxing, soccer, ice hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and field hockey,” advises Dr. Kanani.

He further states that even those participating in noncontact sports (gymnastics) and any recreational activity (skateboarding, mountain biking) that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth would benefit from wearing a protective mouth guard.

If your child is experiencing dental trauma, call the dentist immediately. “The dentist will advise them if they need to come into the office right away for emergency treatment or if it can be postponed for a few days,” says Dr. Chadha, “If unable to reach the dentist, visit the nearest hospital for an evaluation.”

Besides dental trauma, parents should keep an eye on their child’s eating habits. The hot weather can tempt your kid to indulge in energy drinks or soft drinks that are high in sugar. This can lead to two major dental problems. “The first are cavities,” explains Dr. Chadha, “As the mouth is bathed in sugar, the bacteria convert this sugar into acid which then leads to cavity formation.”

The other issue is erosion. “Due to the high acidity of these teeth, the outer layer of teeth, also known as the enamel, starts to erode. This not only weakens the tooth, making it more prone to a cavity but it also increases the chance of sensitivity,” she points out.

Head to SmileTown Dentistry to give your child a pleasant dental experience. Contact the office location most convenient for you to set up an appointment.

Sapphire Bistro is a vision crafted by Gary Sandhu and Gurminder Behniwal to bring forward the forgotten experience – the taste we have left thousands of miles behind us. The food is prepared keeping the same old tradition of fresh ingredients in mind that we all grew up with. After visiting many hotels in and around town, the lack of fresh food or good service encouraged Sandhu and Behniwal to open their own restaurant.
