Traditional learning is evolving and everyone is evolving with it. Learning in this day and age is visual, interactive and available at the click of a button," says Avneet Gill-Dhaliwal, Administrator of Beyond Distributed Learning (DL) School.
Nowadays you will see nearly every student with an iPod, iPad, or some sort of technology they are interacting with. We have witnessed that some children have learned how to use this technology even before they know how to speak properly! These online platforms are revolutionizing the way students learn.
Avneet, a BC certified teacher who has been in the education field for over 10 years, established Beyond Distributed Learning School (Beyond DL) as a way to offer cutting edge Ministry Of Education approved online courses to BC students in Grades 8-12 at no charge. She believes the relatively new innovative approach called e-learning or online learning is the future of education. "It is evident in the evolution of the classroom over the past 50 years. Teachers used to use blackboards with chalk and erasers, it then evolved to whiteboards and markers, then to overhead projectors and power-point, and now to smart boards and iPads. It is very important to understand which direction education is evolving so we can better suit our learners and help facilitate their growth," explains Avneet.
”Just think, when was the last time you picked up your smart-phone or laptop to search a how-to video, plan a trip, or learn about history? When was the last time you looked through the encyclopedia set that your parents bought for you when you were in school? I know for me, it has turned into beautiful room decor rather than a source of knowledge. Nowadays we simply 'Google' information because it's fast, up-to-date, and mostly reliable. "
More importantly, advancements in educational technology has allowed teachers to have a better understanding on how their students learn. "Beyond DL teachers play an integral role of being a coach and facilitator versus the primary source of knowledge," says Avneet, "Our programs introduce a new progressive way of teaching with interactive lessons, individualized assessments, visuals, and tools that excite students to love learning."
There are students who excel in certain subjects but may not have the opportunity at their neighborhood school to move ahead in that subject area. For example, if a Grade 10 student is a math whiz and wants to complete his/her math curriculum at a faster pace, the student has the opportunity to take advanced math classes and complete their education faster.
“Beyond DL programs are perfect for all students who love interactive learning material,” says Avneet. “Students who may be struggling in their current school environment, homebound students and even students who would like to get ahead or be challenged further. We offer both part time and full time course options. We provide the same course curriculum offered at any high school except DL courses are online and highly interactive where the student is in the driver seat to dictate the pace of the material."
