Lexus RZ

  • Lexus RZ

Representing Lexus' initial attempt at a pure EV, the RZ 450e is essentially its upscale take on the Toyota bz4X and Subaru Solterra, as all three share the e-TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) backbone. Similar to its stablemate, the RX, the spindle body design language takes the place of the previously distinctive spindle grille. This angular theme is carried over to various other parts of the vehicle beyond the front, such as the distinctive pointed roof spoiler.

Sold in three trims in Canada (Signature, Luxury, Executive), the middle one was present at EcoRun sprayed in Eminent White Pearl paint and sitting on 20-inch black and machined finish wheels. Since no ICE is present to cool, nor a "frunk" in place, the lightweight aluminum hood is positioned low, creating a sportier look and, as a bonus, improves passenger visibility.

Speaking of the airy interior, the space is highlighted by an expansive, shade-less panoramic glass roof coated to mitigate excessive light and heat. A slim A-pillar cross section (to smooth airflow), robust gap sealing, sound-deadening carpets, glass and foam and active noise cancellation contribute to a ride even more whisper quiet than the average gas-free offering.

The 14-inch touchscreen runs off the same software as the two aforementioned alternatively-branded siblings and is immediately noticeable when the system boots up. Our tester was equipped with the head-up display beaming navigational directions, speed and safety information directly onto the windshield, and the Mark Levinson Surround Sound stereo sounded particularly clear in the near-silent cabin.

A front 150-kilowatt and rear 80-kilowatt motor propels the compact crossover, jointly producing 308 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. DIRECT4 all-wheel drive complements the strut/double-wishbone suspension nicely, resulting in the RZ having a pretty easy time tackling bendy stretches of road. In this specific spec, the 71.4 kilowatt-hour, 96-cell lithium-ion battery pack allows a total travel distance of around 315 kilometres on a full charge, which at 240 volts requires 9.5 hours.

MINI John Cooper S Countryman

MINI is really a misnomer, because measuring at 4,314 millimetres in length, 1,822 millimetres in width and 1,557 millimetres in height, it’s anything but miniature. That means the 2017 model is a full 200 mm longer and 30 mm wider than before. And rare for a performance vehicle, there is loads of cargo space, depending on how the back seats are configured.

2017 Jaguar XE R-Sport Diesel

If you are a penny pincher like myself and really don’t like the fuel consumption numbers on many new vehicles, then this new Jaguar XE R-Sport Diesel might be just the car you need. At the moment, this Jag is probably one of the only diesels on the market, and I know the only luxury model car so equipped.

2017 BMW 540i xDrive

It has been a while since I last tested a BMW and every time I do, I am amazed at how many more advanced products have been added, and as usual I was not disappointed.

2018 Chevrolet Equinox

2018 Chevrolet Equinox
Entering its third generation, Chevrolet’s Equinox has undergone a bumper-to-bumper transformation and gets the honour of becoming the first North American model to offer an exclusively turbocharged powertrain lineup.

2017 Nissan Sentra Turbo

2017 Nissan Sentra Turbo
After disappearing from the portfolio for a few years, a performance Sentra finally returns to the fold with the arrival of the 2017 Nissan SR Turbo. Much more than just a few bolt-on upgrades, it goes as fast as it looks and brings back a sense of fun to the badge that has been sorely missed.

Lincoln Continental Reserve

My ties with the Continental go back to a 1964 model my friend had in the mid-70s, in fact it was the first car I ever drove after I obtained my temporary driver’s licence. Having driven many Lincolns, I will be the first to say that this new Continental is a lot like but genuinely better than its predecessors.
