  • Wedding Story: Kim and Nick Atwal

Names of Groom/Bride: Kim and Nick Atwal

City of Residence: Vancouver

Q: How did you meet?

A: We met in 2015 at an SFU summer formal.

Q: What do you love the most about one another?

A: Kim: What I love most about Nick is that he is very driven and always puts everyone else ahead of himself. No matter how much he has going on, he still attends to everyone's needs, if it's his family or friends.

Nick: Kim is a very easygoing, supportive person who enjoys the simple things in life and helps remind me always to take a second and enjoy what life has to offer daily.

Q: Could you share your proposal story?

A: We booked a spontaneous trip to Denver, Colorado, to watch the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in person. I told her that we should dress a little fancier so we could go out for a nice lunch. She was using the GPS while we were walking to find the lunch spot. I booked the spot close enough to this bridge that she didn't know I had a photographer hiding behind the bush at the end of the bridge. I was holding her hand while we were slowly walking across the bridge, and we were discussing how we should make more spontaneous trips like this when I got down on one knee and asked her if she would marry me. Kim immediately said yes, and the photographer came out from the bushes, to Kim's surprise!

Q: Describe your wedding day and your favourite moment?

A: Our wedding day was full of nervous excitement for both of us. Having our family by our sides made the day extremely special, and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful ceremony. Our favourite moment was when we locked eyes for the first time as Kim entered. It felt like all the buildup was over, and we were finally at this moment we had both been waiting for forever.

Q: Could you tell us about your reception?
A: We wanted an elegant and classy decor for our reception. Charming Affairs did a fantastic job by making our black, chandelier, and white floral décor come to life. DJ Xtatic from Q-Town Productions played all our favourite hits until 3:30 am. We got to see all of our family and friends together for the first time, and it was a great way to celebrate and end the wedding week of festivities.

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

A: Nick wore an off-white and gold achkan with a beige turban and gold pala for the wedding, while I wore a red and gold lehenga. Nick wanted a 007 look for the reception, so he opted for a classic black tuxedo with a bow tie, and I wore an Indian gown covered in rhinestones. Truly felt like a princess in it!

Q: How was your experience with the photography team? Would you recommend it to others?

A: Our experience with the photography team was terrific! They made us feel extremely relaxed and comfortable and gave us some good laughs! I would highly recommend A Master Media to anyone who is looking to hire for any special event.

Q: Where did you go for your honeymoon?

A: We have not gone yet; we will go to Europe next year.

Q: What are your goals as a couple?

A: We want to work hard on building a loving and peaceful life. We want to emphasize family as the number one priority as we grow individually and together.

Q: What are your favourite quotes?

A: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." – From the 1986 hit film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It helps put things in perspective when life gets stressful, as it can for all of us.

Q: What are the strengths of your marriage?

A: We use our individual strengths to improve our lives together. Having balance and working as a team is our greatest strength.

Q: If you could give any advice to other married couples, what would it be?

A: Make sure you're having fun because that's what it's all about. We all have responsibilities, but enjoying your time with your partner is priceless.

Roy and I had plans to watch a movie on the day it happened but plans changed when I was handed a note from my brother. The note stated to follow steps and that’s when a private escalade picked me up from my house. I was taken to the Olympic cauldron (a symbol of when we met) then I was escorted to the Vancouver seaplane terminal where Roy had proposed. We boarded a private seaplane to Horseshoe Bay to the boathouse where we had our first Valentine's day date.
