Darpan News Desk, 30 Jan, 2017 11:07 AM
Names of Groom/Bride: Rolly and Jaspreet
    City: New Westminster
    Photographer: Glimmer Films

I turned around to ask a question to see him on the ground… my first few words “right now OMG?” in shock! He then proceeds to ask me to marry him in Punjabi and I said yes while the crowd around us cheered and took pictures. Cliché but the most magical moment ever!

    Q: How did you meet?

A: We met while waiting for the elevator in our apartment building.  Funny story, we lived on the same floor but had never had a run in with each other before. He was with a friend at the time and I was alone. I could tell he was shy as he was nudging his friend to say something to me. His friend made a comment about my shoes but the conversation didn't go far from there. However, that same evening I had plans to meet with some friends, leaving my apartment all dolled up, I had another run in with Rolly at the elevator. This time he was alone so he had to say something. We made some small talk and once we got to the main floor we went our separate ways.

As I'm walking out he tried to call out for me not knowing my name yet. That's when he asked me in the politest way if I would have dinner with him before formally introducing himself.  He was so shy with his hands behind his back looking down, I said yes and I took his number. Well a week passes and I haven't messaged or called. I was hesitant as I didn't want to date someone that lived in my building. I suppose he had been patient long enough that he left notes on the wall by the elevator “dinner?”. I knew it was him but I ignored it and took the note off, later that day another note. I finally messaged him and told him my reason to not pursue him. Well he didn't take a no for an answer but he also was not aggressive. We chatted a few times via text and well two months later we had dinner and the rest is history.

Q: What do you love most about one another?

A: We are both kids at heart. We can laugh together and always have a good time.

Q: Could you share your proposal story?

A: Rolly asked my parents for permission first. Few months later we went on our very first trip together to Europe. First stop Paris. New Year's Eve at the Eiffel Tower admiring its beauty I was taking pictures all while he's on bended knee behind me. I turned around to ask a question to see him on the ground… my first few words “right now OMG?” in shock! He then proceeds to ask me to marry him in Punjabi and I said yes while the crowd around us cheered and took pictures. Cliché but the most magical moment ever!

Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment?

A: We had two traditional wedding ceremonies- Sikh and Christian, on separate days and both were very special and memorable. During the Sikh ceremony, walking around the Guru Granth Sahib was the most memorable for me as my brothers take part in giving me away while the priest sings the holy vows of marriage. During the Christian ceremony, besides walking down the aisle and seeing my love waiting for me, I must say the best moment was when the adults in his family surprised us and serenaded us with an African song. It was the perfect cultural touch that really got the whole room clapping and grooving along.

Q: Could you tell us about your reception?

A: Our reception was held at Terminal City Club in Vancouver.  It was the perfect intimate setting for our intimate wedding. Universal Decor gave the perfect romantic setup with our décor, DJ Ace of Decibel entertainment had the party going, the food catered from TCC was delicious and plentiful, the ice bar done by Cool Creations was impressive. It was such a fun party we didn't want the night to end!

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

A:  For the Sikh ceremony we went with a peach and gold colour outfits. We went with a simpler design for our outfits as opposed to large elaborate prints. For the Christian ceremony we went for more of a Hollywood glam look. Rolly’s tux was custom made by Pat Coco of Seville tailors in Burnaby. Rolly wore a white jacket with black lapels, white dress shirt and tuxedo pants. The bridal gown was from the Bridal gallery in New Westminster. It was a mermaid cut with white satin bodice and tulle at the bottom worn with a simple cathedral style vail.

    Q: Where did you honeymoon?

A: We are going on our honeymoon in January 2017 to Bali for 3 weeks. We plan to relax but also explore the tropical areas.

Q: What are your goals as a couple?

A: We want to build a life together filled with love, kids and respect for one another and continue to keep having fun, travel and create our own legacy

Q: What are the strengths of your marriage?

A: I believe we respect each other even though we tease each other a whole lot and might
get on each other’s nerves at times, we always respect one another and always tell one another how much we love each other

Q: If you could provide any advice to other married couples, what would it be?

A: Enjoy your moment, enjoy the process and everything will turn out better than you could even imagine.

Roy and I had plans to watch a movie on the day it happened but plans changed when I was handed a note from my brother. The note stated to follow steps and that’s when a private escalade picked me up from my house. I was taken to the Olympic cauldron (a symbol of when we met) then I was escorted to the Vancouver seaplane terminal where Roy had proposed. We boarded a private seaplane to Horseshoe Bay to the boathouse where we had our first Valentine's day date.
