By Tarana Rana, 19 Mar, 2018 12:45 PM

Within easy reach of Vancouver are some of BC’s most interesting destinations

Spring’s finally here. Take advantage of the slightly warmer weather and those lovely extra hours of sunlight this season by exploring Vancouver’s beautiful backyard with these fun and affordable day trips!

    Othello Tunnels, Fraser Valley

Looking for a slice of history? Check out the Othello tunnels, located east of Hope, BC, and just a two-hour drive from Vancouver. An old series of train tunnels and bridges made by the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1900s, these magnificent tunnels are a great feat of engineering and well worth a visit! Britannia Mine Museum

If you’re looking for an educational day out, check out the Britannia Mine Museum which is located just 45 minutes from Vancouver, just off the Sea-to-Sky Highway. Classified as a National Historic Site of Canada, this was once an actual working mine and visitors will be able to see the original equipment, take underground tours and even pan for gold. Bowen Island

Just a 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Bowen Island makes for a great day trip because there’s something here for everyone. Visit the Bowen Island Pub for a cozy meal, stroll through Artisan Square for some shopping, perhaps visiting a gallery or two. Outdoorsy types can hike to Dorman Point for spectacular views or check out some of the more challenging trails. Photo: Tourism Bowen Island

    Cascade Falls, Mission

For a lovely nature walk, head to Cascade Falls Regional Park in Mission, BC, and walk up to Vancouver’s most scenic and accessible waterfall. As it’s an extremely easy trek to the waterfall, this makes it a great choice for families with kids or for those lazy Sundays where you want a taste of the outdoors, but don’t actually want to strain yourself. Whytecliff Park, West Vancouver

Just a stone’s throw from Horseshoe Bay, escape to Whytecliff Park for spectacular views of the rugged cliffs and scenic walks on the beach. For more adventurous explorers, this is also a great spot for scuba diving! Photo: Jaden Nyberg

Santa Monica is a town for walking. Santa Monica Place, Montana Avenue and Main Street are home to many upscale boutiques if shopping is your thing. Third Street Promenade is like an “outdoor living room”, with all forms of entertainment – street performers, movie theaters, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and shopping.
