Winter - Skin Blues Survival Guide

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 08 Feb, 2014 03:10 AM
  • Winter - Skin Blues Survival Guide
We welcome winter as it brings the beauty of white wonderland with fluffy flakes of snow and a festive season to cherish. Yes, all of us love snowflakes, but not flaky skin. The wicked winter weather is not helpful when it comes to skin concerns like dryness, dullness and dehydration. When the temperature drops outside it rises inside; this combination of hot and cold has an unforgiving effect on the skin. Pale, dry, flaky skin is not what you want when you show off your trendy winter wear.

Our winter skin survival guide will help you combat this concern and enjoy some spa treatments in the comfort of your home with some easy remedies.

H2O – A Secret Ingredient

Increase your body’s natural moisture level by keeping yourself hydrated. Dry skin can cause premature aging, more irritation, and sensitive skin. The amount of water you intake in winter should be the same as the summer. The importance of this essential liquid should not be ignored; water is one of the most vital parts of a daily skin care regime.

Dehydration can occur because of the moisture evaporation through the skin and prolonged exposure to water in the form of long hot showers and soaking in hot tubs. Hot water tends to remove natural oils from our skin surface. Seal in that moisture by applying body lotions or creams on slightly damp skin and add emulsifying oils like lanolin to retain moisture when taking a bath. The four C’s – Cold Cream, Colloidal oatmeal, Cocoa butter and Coconut oil are great for cleansing, exfoliating , and moisturizing for anybody who is struggling with dry skin.

Remedies for Radiant Skin

Beauty begins with healthy skin; it is not a cliché that our skin reveals the truth about our lifestyle. No matter how radiant our skin looks throughout the rest of the months, cold weather’s extreme conditions play a significant effect. However, this season, healthy, smooth, supple and younger looking skin is achievable. Revitalize your skin by scheduling an appointment for a detoxifying facial and body wrap.

Deep cleansing is vital for glowing skin and the use of exfoliators is a must to eliminate dead skin cells and clear clogged pores. This helps in new cell growth, enhances, and promotes the process of absorbing skin care products. Switching to a cream cleanser from a strong foaming one will definitely help to restore your skin’s moisture. Opt for natural or herbal products even if you are buying them from a department store.

Winter skin can be treated with a home made beauty mask. It is a well known fact that natural products like Aloe Vera are soothing, healing, and moisturizing, while Calendula has skin softening properties. In addition, lime juice and orange peel powder helps to eliminate blemishes.

Try this beauty mask to rejuvenate dry and dull skin:

Mix 1 tablespoon of gram flour
1/4th teaspoon of orange peel powder
1 tablespoon of yogurt
1 teaspoon of olive oil

Apply on the face and let it dry approximately 15 minutes. Gradually rub your skin very gently in circular motion. Rinse your face with lukewarm water and splash with cold water. Pat dry your skin and apply a gentle moisturizer.

For a more sensitive and delicate skin:

Mix 1 tablespoon of cucumber juice
1 tablespoon of milk
A few drops of rose water.

Apply on face and neck for 15 minutes –Rinse with water.

This tonic is made with natural products and is soothing, calming and moisturizing. Home made masks, lotions and cleansers are highly effective, but have the disadvantage of a minimal shelf life because they are free from preservatives. Cosmetic companies like Kiehl’s and Clarins and professional spa lines, like Eminence carry organic and plant based products. Look for ingredients that increase the amount of oxygen within the skin and should have the ability to retain the moisture.

Whether you have oily, combination or dry and sensitive skin – all of them suffer from winter skin blues, so ensure you stay hydrated and use our tips to get glowing results.

WINTER WAKEUP MAKEUP

Have you ever thought it was important to protect your face from harsh cold weather and sun rays in winter? Typically, all our effort goes to protecting our bodies from the frosty, freezing climate. Our face requires the same amount of attention if not more because of its exposure to the harshness of winter.

Form a barrier by using moisturizers with sunscreen and apply winter makeup in a way that adds color and vitality to your skin. Match your foundation color to your current skin tone because you will most likely not be as tanned as summer days. A pale complexion in winter is often left alone and summer sizzles with loads of bronzers.

Enhance your complexion by adding a bronzing tint to your moisturizing foundation, but keep that bronze goddess look for warmer temperatures. Your look must be clean, classic and polished. Give your pout a stained look with berry and cherry colour glosses and lip balms and keep those focal points looking soft yet smouldering. Winter foundation plays an important role in making your skin look dewy, so use your fingers to apply the color on the face as it warms up the product and helps in even application so you do not have a dry flaky foundation effect.

Embrace the beauty of winter and splurge yourself to natural organic spa treatments, and let the cliché of winter blue skin be just a cliché.
