Must-have’s for the Well-Dressed Man

Accessories that will keep your game sharp and style on point.

The ultimate guide for the “Gentlemen” does not exist. What does exist is a set of recommendations that will keep your game sharp and style on point, no matter what the occasion or season.

First, although this may not be for everyone, there has been a significant increase in the popularity of men’s jewellery. This ranges from stingray bracelets to silver rings. Always look for something that speaks to you as a person, because not only is it an accessory but an awesome conversation starter.

Next, the collar pin for a dress shirt is another item that has been seeing a rise in popularity. It adds a bit of character to nearly any suit, whether you’re going to a corporate business meeting or night out at a rooftop bar. It’s one of those accessories you can wear with a tie or without. The added layer of sophistication is subtle because of its size but noticeable because it’s one of the first places people look. The question is: do you want to blend in or stand out among the masses?

The third thing to keep in mind is there are always two sides to any style. Besides going for a very modern look with the collar pin, you can opt for a pair of stainless steel collar stays. Behind most collars there are always factory-made plastic collar stays. Switch those with your new stainless steel ones. They offer you a cleaner and crisper look. Believe me; most people wouldn’t even know what collar stays are so it’s one of those add-ons that doesn’t merit a whole lot of praises. However, it’s the added bit of “Je ne sais quoi” that makes it all worth it. Much like how concepts such as a person’s “presence” are illusory, they nonetheless make a difference.

There’s a saying in Chinese when it comes to dressing well: “Wear the wrong shoes and look 50 percent poorer.” That has always been something that stuck out with me and if you really think about it, it makes perfect sense. No matter how fancy the suit, how nice the tie or how good looking you are, if it’s matched with outworn dress shoes, you might as well go casual.

Perfect shoes to have in your arsenal are double monk, single monk and classic oxfords with rounded toes. Double monk are for a more formal occasion, whereas single monk are fine for a more casual night out, and oxfords are your all-purpose shoes that can be worn at any occasion. The only tip is make sure to get your shoes shined regularly because 1) it looks better and 2) it helps maintain the integrity of the shoes so you can wear them longer.

Style pointers for women

When it comes to women’s fashion, I cannot say with confidence that I know what women want and I mostly likely never will. However, I can offer two pointers that have been made known to me by friends as well as some I have picked up myself just by being alive and going out once in a while.

- It is understandable that some women live and die by the makeup they wear, with all the tutorials and step-by-step guides to looking beautiful they’ve seen. I’m here to tell you that quite a number of men really do view it as excessive. Not only do you lose your uniqueness but it’s really just a pain. Go for a more minimalist and natural look. It will save you hours of time as well make you stand out among the girls who seemed to have all watched the same tutorial.

- One more small tidbit is that the exposure you get from wearing 5-inch heels only lasts for about as long as it takes for you to get into the club or venue. Men understand that women in heels look sexier but again, there is no need to go to the extreme. Losing the capability to stand as the night progresses because your feet hurt is worse than just wearing slightly shorter heels. Look amazing but be practical.

Kenzo piles it all on at Paris Fashion Week, says layering is in
PARIS — This season's mantra is: pile it all on. We've seen it notably at Lanvin, Dries Van Noten — and now, here, at Kenzo's draped, voluminous and colorful fashion spectacle. It takes a lot to drag fashionistas out early on a Sunday morning to a venue on the outskirts of the city.
