Makeover Your Mom Style

Take your mom uniform from tired to trendy

Images of motherhood are often full of dirty dishes, piles of laundry, and toys strewn all around a house. A tired mom, dressed in sweat pants and a stained top, is never too far from the chaos.

While being a mom certainly brings with it an abundance of responsibilities, it doesn’t have to bring an out-of-date fashion sense or a closet left untouched. Being busy, organized or just ready to have fun with your kids doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your style; moms can be responsible, practical and playful while also being fashionable.

Accessories play an important role for feeling put together and on trend. Adding one statement piece, like a scarf or bold necklace, which will complete an outfit without overwhelming it, is an easy way to up your style game. Fun earrings or an arm full of bangles dress up an outfit or allow your personality to shine. Statement sunglasses can quickly update your look at little cost. Accessories are an easy way to show off your style without getting in the way of any mom duties you may have dressed for.

Depending on the season, a structured jacket can instantly add some glamour to an otherwise simple style. A coloured blazer, classic denim or moto jacket all can be thrown on over jeans and a t-shirt, pulling together a more sophisticated and intentional outfit.

Adding ‘in’ colours to your wardrobe in unexpected places will update a closet full of black and blahs. Try a pair of flats in royal blue or a purse in emerald green to bring a punch of popular colours with you whenever you get out of the house. Neutral handbags may match your daily look but don’t let yourself be so basic – pick a colour that is on trend and, in turn, be ready for the compliments you’ll get just from carrying it.

Sneakers haven’t always screamed style but they’re starting to; you don’t have to sacrifice comfort just to feel fashionable. There are an increasing number of options for flattering but functional shoes that are a far cry from the ones you’d wear to workout.

Most moms welcome simplicity into their otherwise chaotic schedules; but don’t let simple mean plain. Instead, stick to the classics for clean, uncluttered and timeless looks. Great basics allow busy moms to mix and match their outfits effortlessly without taking up too much time deciding what to wear. Classic pieces will outlast any trend, keeping you ready for whatever wardrobe changes you might want to make in the future.

How your clothes fit certainly affects how you look and, as a mom, it’s something easy to forgo when you don’t make yourself a priority. Don’t default to baggy clothes to hide those flaws or your new figure! Becoming a mother means your body may have changed in size and shape so taking the time to find clothes that fit and flatter your body will not only make you feel more presentable but also give you more confidence to lose the leggings and step out in style.

Rework your closet to create looks that may seem unexpected but don’t require additional effort. By adding a belt, mixing office chic with comfy and casual or layering colour over texture, you might find your closet full of outfits when you originally thought you had nothing to wear.

While time to yourself as a mom may feel limited, a few minutes to do your hair can make you feel refreshed and polished. Dry shampoo and a flat iron is all you need to give your locks some love and add a bit of poise to your potential unruly mane.

Similarly, if your morning makeup routine could take you all morning, skip everything but the essentials. A little moisturizer, some mascara and lip gloss are enough to update your look. A bold lip colour can transform your face from tired to attractive in one easy step.

It may take time to find the pieces, colours and styles that suit your shape, colouring and lifestyle but an investment early on can bring style and sophistication to the life of a busy mom. Whether you’re in a funk or in need of an overhaul, there’s no reason why a fashionable mom should be an oxymoron.
