In with a bang Out with a fizzle!

Micro-trends in fashion are like crash diets – they last only a fortnight and disappear in a blink of an eye. Remember when Ugg’s were the “It” fashion statement; the only accessory you felt you needed to strut down the street (definitely a simpler time for your man’s wallet)? In 2011 Dolce & Gabbana debuted their star-studded autumn dresses – shortly after that stars were sighted wearing star studded anything and everything. Last but certainly NOT the least – who can forget when men used to wear their pants below the waist line for “swag”? Disaster! Here’s the secret of a micro-trend – catch it before it flutters off the shelves. Let’s look at a few micro-trends for 2013 to keep you ahead of the game!

2013 gives the traditional Indian dhoti the twenty first century upgrade – Dhoti Pants are the new addition to the fashion closet. The traditional Dhoti is a great alternative to the regular casual jeans/ pants to help you add a bit of culture to your ensemble. Tarun Tahiliani debuts the Dhoti Pant in his spring/ summer 2013 line at the Lakme Fashion show in March. He introduced variations of the pants – from structured to flowy – perfect for those beautiful summers! The pants were artistically paired with gorgeous handcrafted off-white scarves, printed ponchos, embroidered blouses.

Designer Stephany D’Souza introduced her own version of dhoti pants for the summer. With the signature summer lime green dhoti pants paired with an equally pastel yellow top – D’Souza seems no rookie to summer trends. The stars have accepted the casual yet trendy look of dhoti pants with open arms.

With such an edgy trend – sometimes you find yourself scratching your heading wondering how to style these pants…hmmm. With the banana shape of the dhoti pants, it’s easier to pair it with a bulky top to add weight to your upper body. Add a trendy belt to give your outfit the shape it deserves. For a finished summer look – add on a pair of wedges for those summer nights! The Dhoti pant can be paired with just about anything – it’s all about adding your personality to the mix!

Cannes International Film Festival had the crowd buzzing for another micro-trend. Sonam Kapoor dressed in a gorgeous Anamika Khanna sari, wore no jewellery except for one which made quite a statement.  Our fashionista and an all round remarkable actress was spotted wearing a big pearl nath (nose ring)!

The actress had borrowed the nose ring from her mother, Sunita Kapoor’s outstanding jewellery line. Traditionally the nose ring is worn by a woman on her wedding day, however, now they have become more of a fashion statement. Rajiv Arora, co-founder of Amrapali Jewellers told Vogue “The nath draws so much attention because it’s not commonly worn, and manages to look both sexy and traditional at the same time.” The larger than life nath can be a bit tricky – the controversial jewellery may not be popular with everyone but can most definitely help you stick out from the general crowd!

2013 summer is all about having fun with the styles and adding a bit of edge to tradition! Micro-trends have a speciality of taking the fashion world by storm and for disappearing just as fast – so don’t procrastinate, try out a look out of your comfort zone and the world may just be surprised!
