By Renu Singh-Joseph, 20 May, 2019 12:49 AM

Get excited, have fun and let your creativity shine while you refresh and revitalize your indoor and outdoor living spaces this spring and summer!

The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming and the time has come to revitalize your interior living spaces and refresh your outdoor oasis this spring and summer seasons! Take time to declutter your home, be mindful about furniture and décor – think purpose and functionality – and make way for this year’s décor themes. Moreover, envision indoor and outdoor living spaces that are not only classic and timeless, but evoke a sense of your individuality and creative style.

So what are the décor and style themes for spring/summer this year? “Natural, sustainable and renewable is top of mind for spring and summer. Mixing up your style a bit with vibes of Boho meeting Mid-Century and using hints of vibrant colour in jewel tones highlighted with mixed metals,” says interior designer Kelly Arthur, who is also the creative director of K. Arthur Design Collective Inc.

    70’s Scandi Style

There will be a return to Scandinavian style, which is known for its neutral colours and clean lines, however the focus will be 70’s Scandi style – geometric prints, natural materials and a brighter, bolder colour palette with an emphasis on the ‘less is more’ philosophy, so don’t over clutter your space if you go with this style.

    Living Coral

The ‘Pantone Colour of the Year’ for 2019 is Living Coral – “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” This fresh, gorgeous colour would be the perfect addition to your interior and outdoor living spaces this spring and summer. “You can tastefully incorporate ‘Pantone’s Colour of the Year’ by adding accent cushions or art work with hits of Living Coral to your living spaces. You can also incorporate a key upholstered piece into your décor – imagine this piece against a backdrop of white walls, creating a fresh and eye-catching look,” says Arthur.

    Natural, Sustainable and Renewable

As we gain more knowledge about environmental issues, climate change and the impact of our carbon footprint, awareness leads to change and a shift in traditional ways of thinking or doing things. This holds true with style and décor as homeowners are turning to natural, sustainable and renewable elements to implement in their homes. “For 2019, there is greater interest in biophilia – emphasizing the relationship between humankind and nature, and the connections between the two,” according to Angie Lee of FXCollaborative.

This year, the theme is incorporating furniture pieces or décor elements that are environmentally-friendly or constructed from sustainable or recycled sources; natural or organic materials such as raw or unfinished wood products to stone and plants; and opting for handcrafted designs and custom styles that are not disposable but can withstand the test of time – think longevity.

    Outdoor Living

When it starts to get warm outside, Canadians get excited as they can relax and enjoy their outdoor living spaces from backyards to balconies and patios. An affordable way to update your outdoor décor is to add new throw pillows in the latest colour palette of the season – this year, think rich, jewel tones or shades of coral. The possibilities are endless, you can add the following features to enhance and customize your outdoor oasis: potted plants or flowers; a few Adirondack chairs painted to match your colour scheme; a beautiful fire pit – either gas or wood burning; and romantic mood lighting to bring that magical glow to your oasis when the sun sets (there are so many options, so have fun selecting the lighting that best matches your space).

Design Wisdom Get excited, have fun and let your creativity shine while you refresh and revitalize your indoor and outdoor living spaces this spring and summer! “Homeowners can spice up their living and outdoor spaces by layering materials, using softer lines in their furnishings and mixing modern with a bit of vintage. Remember – comfort is key!” says Arthur.

When it comes to décor and style, what are the three tips that homeowners can utilize year round? Arthur shares her design wisdom, “Less is more so declutter your spaces. Don’t be afraid to mix styles. Lastly, use natural organic materials like wood, stone and plant life to bring the nature of outside in.”

It is that time of the year where colours, lights and cuisines all take on a meaning of their own. This day has several names in India but it is more popularly known as Diwali – “the festival of lights” – and may I add that the festival remains quite true to its name.
