You Are It is a new creation by prominent Vancouver theatre artists Sherry J. Yoon and Deborah Williams, and featuring Carmen Aguirre. “Williams makes friends with people on the bus and invites them home for dinner; Aguirre claims that she would literally kill—spill blood—if a sister asked her to do it.” This is how The Georgia Straight describes two extremes in the continuum of friendship brought to light in You Are It — a bracingly honest look at how a female friendship develops.
Co-creator and performer Deborah Williams says, “I’ve been obsessed with female friendship for years, always feeling like I am doing it wrong. I love eventually finding out that everyone knows exactly what friendship is, the rules, limitations and meaning, and those assumptions are completely different than their friends' understandings.”
Co-creator and Boca del Lupo Artistic Director Sherry J. Yoon adds, “We think that our individual system and rules of how we relate to one another are universal, but they’re really individual. When mined-down, we realize that the ideas are rooted in the strangest of places, like our childhood, something we read, our culture, our mothers, and our unconscious biases that can keep us from getting close. Ultimately, You Are It is about honesty and compassion, and laughing at the painful truth of it all.”
As with all Micro Performance Series shows, the audience is both a spectator and participant and who better to spend an intimate evening with that Deborah Williams and Carmen Aguirre?
