The City of Surrey announced today Canadian rock legend Tom Cochrane & Red Rider will headline its annual free Canada Day celebration at Surrey’s Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre on Friday, July 1.
Presented by Coast Capital Savings, this year’s family friendly celebration—which marks Canada’s 149th birthday—will be the largest Canada Day event in Western Canada with attendance expected to surpass 110,000 people.
“Our annual Canada Day celebration always brings out a big crowd to enjoy the festivities and stellar live entertainment,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “With iconic Canadian rock legends Tom Cochrane & Red Rider headlining this year, I expect another huge gathering of flag waving and proud Canadians will be on hand to celebrate our national pride, community spirit and what it means to be Canadian.”
This year’s musical guests will also feature Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, The Dudes, En Karma, Heroes of Rock and DJ Flipout. Event festivities include a midway with games and rides, over 100 exhibitors, an expanded kids’ play area and new for 2016: the Canada 150 count-down zone and the Science World on the Road show.
“Surrey’s free Canada Day celebration draws residents and fellow Canadians together to honour our great country and one another,” said Bruce Hayne, Chair of the Parks, Recreation & Sport Tourism Committee. “An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the generous support of our various corporate sponsors including Coast Capital Savings, Care at Home and CTV.”
“Our community promise is to help build a richer future for our youth in your community, and family events like Canada Day celebrations are the perfect opportunity to do that, and to unreservedly show our Canadian colours and celebrate all things Canadian,” said Wendy Lachance, Director, Community Leadership. “Showing an appreciation of our rich cultural diversity, our proud history and our heritage is a key part of Coast Capital Savings’ Youth Get It investment program as it helps to bring our community together.”
