The Cultch presents BLACK BOYS

HISTORIC THEATRE16 Jan '18 to 20 Jan '18 @ 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM
  • The Cultch presents BLACK BOYS
The Cultch and Zee Zee Theatre (Vancouver) are thrilled to present Buddies in Bad Times and Saga Collectif’s smash-hit Black Boys. In a society where the Black male body is both vilified and sexualized, Black Boys offers a raw and timely exploration of queer male Blackness.

Created from the lives of three people seeking a deeper understanding of themselves, of each other, and of how they encounter the world. The Dora-nominated ensemble— Stephen Jackman-Torkoff, Tawiah Ben-Eben M’Carthy & Thomas Olajide — explore their unique identities on stage, subverting the ways in which gender, sexuality, and race are performed. “It was important to capture each creator’s unique style and rhythm in our effort to liberate the Black male body, acknowledging history and traumas while expressing the power and beauty of the Black experience” says a Saga Collectif statement. “Our goal was to bring Thomas, Tawiah, and Stephen to the stage in a way that is risky, honest, and innovative, collectively imagining a healthier Black narrative.”

Saga Collectif began developing Black Boys in 2012, and joined the Buddies Residency Program the following year. With this production, Saga Collectif and Buddies continue to inject vital queer perspectives into the broader social conversation. At a time of heightened awareness and action around the lives of Black people, this show adds a new voice to those already engaged in important discussions of Blackness.
