The Cultch presents Bears

HISTORIC THEATRE08 May '18 to 12 May '18 @ 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM
  • The Cultch presents Bears
The Cultch is excited to present Bears, a multi-disciplinary dark comedy about the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline from Alberta Aboriginal Performing Arts and Punctuate! Theatre. Bears  runs May 8-12, 2018 at the Historic Theatre.

The prime suspect in a workplace accident, Floyd has to get out of town fast. Pursued by the RCMP, he heads through the Rockies for Burnaby, B.C, along the route of the Kinder Morgan Transmountain Pipeline. By the time he reaches the Pacific, Floyd has experienced changes - his gait widening, his muscles bulging, his sense of smell heightening...

Few issues facing Canadians are attracting as much attention as the tar sands and the proposed massive expansion of their exploitation. Unapologetically political, Bears strives to increase dialogue about the devastating effects economic greed is taking on the lands of our country’s First Nations peoples.

Written and directed by Matthew MacKenzie (SIA, The Particulars, The Other) and starring award-winning (and former tar sands worker) Métis theatre artist Sheldon Elter (Métis Mutt), Bears  is a welcome new Canadian play, led by a cast and creative team of primarily Indigenous artists. Featuring a chorus of contemporary dancers choreographed by seven time Dora Award nominee Monica Dottor, it was nominated for five Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards and won in two categories.
