Surrey Art Gallery’s Family Sunday

Surrey Art Gallery20 Oct '19 @ 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

See, sense, sculpt, and more! Surrey Art Gallery invites families and friends to learn, connect, and make art on Sunday, October 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m at its fall Family Sunday. The day’s theme is “Digital Worlds, Natural Worlds, and Me!” Everyone is welcome at this free drop-in event. Children must be with an adult.

Use your senses to fully experience the art on display at the Gallery! Growing from the 20th anniversary of the Gallery’s TechLab and its fall exhibition Garden in the Machine, art activities invite families to take a closer look at patterns in nature that are mirrored in technology. Try out a plant printmaking area, a collaborative found object sculpture, and constructing a booklet in a box—inspired by artist Robert Youds’s use of boxes in his large-scale installation. The booklet includes a map of the event, and a search-and-find challenge in the Gallery!

Make interesting shapes, patterns, and lighting to add to the collaborative sculpture, also inspired by Youds’s work. His artwork For Everyone a Fountain uses colours, lights, office supplies, and furniture in an innovative way—to represent nature, and specifically the plants at Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. Add your creativity to the ever-changing sculpture (made from working imaginatively with recycled and everyday materials) to represent your personal connection to nature!

Also based on a garden, Faisal Anwar’s bright, geometric, multi-projected artwork CharBagh shows images that represent how people relate to nature. This project will be live at the event and families can draw, write, or photograph their response to one of his four questions:

What are the images that symbolize your relationship to nature? (#CharBaghNature)
What are the images that share your relationship to food sustainability? (#CharBaghViable)
What are the images that capture the current moment of climate change? (#CharBaghClimate)
What are images that represent better sustainable practices? (#CharBaghPerform)

Responses will be uploaded to Instagram and appear in the projection for all to see!

Look for the Gallery’s dedicated sensory-friendly space to get creative with different materials. Resources like noise-cancelling headphones and squishy seats, as well as staff with specialized training in neurodiversity, will be around to facilitate comfortable and relaxed exploration.

Finally, have your voice amplified through the art of digital music in an interactive half-hour turntabling and hip-hop performance with Metaphor at 12 noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Metaphor's show ELEMENTS invites participants to move to the beat and learn about poetry, rap, turntablism, beatboxing, dance, and interactive music. ArtStarts in Schools, a charitable organization that expands the role of art in education, says “The Metaphor crew are experts at inspiring youth—ready to rock shows and grow hearts.”

Tickets for the performance are free but must be picked up upon arrival in the Gallery to reserve your spot.
