The COURAGE Conference, 30 January – 2 February (9am – 3pm) at John Oliver Secondary School, will provide another rich and engaging mid-year experience for students. The focus will be on social responsibility and engagement, as students deepen their embrace of the COURAGE Code which expresses the school’s values – Compassion, Optimism, Unity, Responsibility, Adaptability, Gratitude and Engagement.
The week was previewed in a visit on 24 January 2018 from the Honourable Harjit Sajjan, Minister of National Defense, who shared his experiences and insights on courage and compassion in an inspiring and engaging address to the student body.
The four day conference will include events and activities such as:
• Aboriginal Education activities and storytelling
• Out in Schools Inclusion and Diversity activities
• Social Justice workshops
• Math Olympics
• Human Books Event
• Team building, Maker Space, Capacity Café
• STEM experiences
• Slam poetry
• Health and Wellness workshops
Guests include Shane Point, VSB Knowledge Keeper and Elder in Residence, Fred Fox, brother of Terry Fox, and Musqueam hip hop artist Christie Lee Charles. As well, more than 35 science, math and other experts will meet and chat with students during the Human Books Event, and many community partners will join us in bringing the fun and meaningful experiences listed above to the school.
