Because We Are Girls Opens Surrey Civic Theatres' 2019/20 Season

Surrey Arts Centre27 Sep '19 @ 7:30 PM - 10:30 PM

The acclaimed documentary Because We Are Girls hails the arrival of the new season at Surrey Civic Theatres, Friday, September 27, 7:30pm at the Surrey Arts Centre. Co-presented by Sahara Services, this compelling and beautifully rendered film reveals the lives of three sisters coming to terms with a dark family secret and the actions they take to move into the light.

Surrey Civic Theatres new series of documentaries and short films is curated in partnership with the National Film Board of Canada by Neil Scott,
performing arts programmer, Centre Stage at Surrey City Hall. First in the series, Because We Are Girls, offers a unique and powerful tribute to
women's strength in the face of profound trauma.

The film follows Salakshana, Kira and Jeeti Pooni as they come to terms with a devasting secret. From a conservative Indo-Canadian family living in a small town in the interior of British Columbia the three sisters were sexually abused by an older relative beginning in their childhood years.

Documentarian Baljit Sangra sensitively explores the impact of sexual abuse on a family, deftly intertwining touching home footage of the young, innocent girls they once were alongside uplifting scenes of the strong, empowered women they have become. The film is witness to the emotional toll that pursuing justice through the courts and confronting their family takes on the sisters.

Prior to the screening there will be a display of artworks on the theme of sexual abuse. After the film Sahara Services moderates a panel discussion with a Q&A. Counsellors are available for emotional support. Tickets are $12 on-line now at www.tickets.surrey.ca or box office 604-501-5566. Subscription for the full film series $27 available through the box office.
