Maude (Nicola Cavendish) is on the wrong side of fifty, totally broke, and living in a trailer park in Bakersfield, California. Just when things look their worst, she stumbles across a long-lost painting by the renowned Jackson Pollock—or is it? To prove she’s got a masterpiece on her hands, Maude invites a world-class art expert (Jonathan Monro) to authenticate it. Cultures collide as these polar opposites evaluate the colour of each other’s character and explore their perspectives on what is real, in life and in art.
“Maude is a survivor, hardened by a life short on love and likely long on regret,” says Nicola Cavendish. “After working together on 4000 Miles, I’m excited to work with Roy again because he has a fine inquiring mind and leaves no stone unturned in the exploration of a script. His rehearsals are always full of rich laughter and insight. It’s been a joy to create a dynamo character like Maude in Roy’s rehearsal hall.”
Director Roy Surette adds, “It’s always a delight to collaborate with my great friend Nicola Cavendish —we’ve done more than 10 shows together! I loved the way she and Jonathan Monro played together in Christopher Newton’s hilarious production of Glorious!—the Florence Foster Jenkins story—and ten years later they reunite in very different but equally endearing roles. Sublime!”
