Arts Club Theatre Company presents carried away on the crest of a wave

Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage19 Mar '20 to 19 Apr '20 @ 7:30 PM - 11:00 PM

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami claimed over a quarter of a million lives, devastating coastal communities in a dozen different countries. David Yee’s carried away on the crest of a wave—playing on the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage from March 19 to April 19—grapples with the enormity of this tragedy, unfolding in a series of breathtaking vignettes penned by Yee after conducting interviews with and reading accounts from survivors.

Winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama and the 2013 Carol Bolt Award from the Playwrights Guild of Canada, carried away on the crest of a wave weaves together nine evocative stories about this cataclysmic event. The finely drawn characters illustrate the interconnectedness of human experience, revealing the resonance of this natural disaster around the world and showing a pathway to hope.

David Yee is a half Chinese, half Scottish playwright and actor, born and raised in Toronto. He is the co-founding Artistic Director of fu-GEN Theatre Company, Canada’s premiere professional Asian Canadian theatre company. A Dora Mavor Moore Award–nominated actor and playwright, his work has been produced internationally and at home. He works extensively as both an artist in and advocate for the Asian Canadian community.

Of the script, Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran said, “I’m astonished every time I read this piece. The characters are vivid and full of empathetic humanity. I adore the evocative, mysterious form, and I find the amount of detail shared about each story captivating and tantalizing.”
