I recently visited the famous Vancouver Christmas Market held at Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza. Just as the name suggests, this market has everything one needs to experience the festive spirit. There is yummy food, hot beverages, delicious desserts, beautiful décor and gift items, and live entertainment in the form of performers singing Christmas carols. With the exciting elements of the happy season all in one place, one is sure to have an enjoyable time.
Known as the best place to sample traditional German far, there are tons of stalls (over 50 vendors) at the market – of food, drinks and gifts. Try the famous Hurricane Potato Fries which is basically a fried potato in a spiral shape on a stick. From German schnitzel and Scottish shortbread to Dutch mini pancakes and waffles, options include an array of old favourites and new flavours.
The chilly weather will make you crave for some hot chocolate – which is delicious and served with whip cream or marshmallows at one of the stalls. For those looking for something more, the market has vendors selling mulled wine, beer and award-winning spirits as well. You can also enjoy a glass of eggnog – a beverage that is a must during this season.
As for gifts and décor – unique handmade creations on offer include wooden toys, holiday ornaments, knitted goods and more. There are various Christmas decorations, wooden nativity items, handmade scented soaps and candles, artistic jewellery, and sweaters and winter wear.
Kids will love the market. There are special activities like gingerbread decorating, the Star Seeker Scavenger Hunt, Vancouver’s only Christmas carousel, and not to forget lots of sweet treats.
The live entertainment will keep you energized throughout your visit. At some point you will unknowing end up singing yuletide carols along with the performer. The market gives you a feel of Christmas and gets you prepared for the holidays ahead.
A tip: Visit the market in the evening to enjoy the twinkling and colourful lights. The beautiful set-up and the brightly-lit Xmas tree will make you feel all Christmassy.
The Vancouver Christmas Market is on till December 24. For more details and tickets, visit www.vancouverchristmasmarket.com
