DARPAN's Must Watch at VIFF 2016: Twilight Over Burma

VIFF,29 Sep '16 to 14 Oct '16 @ 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
See the movie that censors in Burma pulled from a human rights film festival in the interest of “national unity” and “the stability of the country and of our people." In that newly liberalized nation it seems that some art is still too powerful, too persuasive, too effective to be tolerated.

Twilight Over Burma is a heady film, mixing romance with politics and melodrama with history. It tells the story of Inge (Maria Ehrich), a beautiful Austrian student who, at an elite gathering, meets Sao Kya Seng (Daweerit Chullasapy). He’s a handsome fellow, affable and gentle, and soon the two are getting married. It’s only at their wedding that the big surprise drops: Sao is none other than the prince of Burma. What follows is not exactly a bride’s dream: Inge lives an opulent life, trying as best she can to improve the lives of her subjects, but then a coup occurs and Sao is taken prisoner. She will do everything in her power to free him and to fight for her nation, but the new powers are aligned against her.

Romance, intrigue and politics make for a winning combination; add great locations and a strong touch of class and you’ve got moviemaking of the kind that Hollywood used to do so well.
