Fibre art is one of our favourite themes here at The ACT Art Gallery, so we’re delighted to be showing work from our very own Whonnock Weavers & Spinners Guild. This local exhibition is timed to coincide with the Textile Society of America’s symposium held in Vancouver this year, and the theme, From Deep Local to Pan Global, takes a sweeping look at the development of textiles on both a local and global scale.
OUT OF THE WOODS riffs on these ideas, as well, particularly with regard to the materials used. Local hand spun fleece with all its traditional comfort will share the space with sculptural pieces made of manmade and recycled materials– there’s even a beautifully crafted basket made from expired camera film. There never seems to be a limit on the collective imagination of the Whonnock Weavers and Spinners.
The long run of the exhibition, from September 8 – October 27, should ensure that you even make time to make a return visit – there is much to learn and enjoy. Hand-spinning demonstrations will take place form 12:30-3pm on Friday, Sept 14, Saturday, Sept 22, Friday , Oct 12 and Saturday, Oct 13. FREE ADMISSION.
OUT OF THE WOODS is dedicated to Ellen Hamilton, who envisioned this exhibition before her untimely passing 2017.
