See the world through a child’s eyes at Surrey Art Gallery

Surrey Art Gallery08 Feb '20 to 10 May '20 @ 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Surrey Art Gallery is proud to host an eclectic display of art from young artists in local schools. Art by Surrey Elementary School Students opens on February 8 and runs until May 10. Admission is free.

Art by Elementary School Students showcases the enormous variety and depth of art education at School District 36. Participating artists range from grades one through seven. Artworks on display highlight a wealth of subjects, both personal and universal. The exhibition provides visitors with a colourful glimpse into the topics many of today’s children find most interesting and inspiring—fantastical creatures, popular musicians, flowers and landscapes, as well as the challenges of social media.

The exhibition demonstrates one of the most critical roles of art education today: to develop the ability to relate to society and the world at large through creative self-expression.

“Although we have been working with the Surrey School District for many years, I never fail to be surprised by the thoughtfulness and talent of our community’s young artists,” says Assistant Curator Rhys Edwards. “These drawings and paintings remind us that children have a great deal to say about our world, and what they have to say is both eloquent and profoundly relevant to the moment in which we are living.”

Since 1983, Surrey Art Gallery annually hosts an exhibition showcasing the creativity of students participating in the Surrey School District’s art education programs, and the value of art education in the BC school curriculum. These exhibitions are developed through ongoing partnerships with Surrey’s schools and art teachers.

Today, communities across Canada have little knowledge of the role Indians played in World War I and the shared history with their Canadian counterparts. Lest we forget, IMFC plans to commemorate those that lost their lives on the Western Front. To mark the centennial of the landing of Indian Troops in France in September 1914 a series of upcoming free events is planned for this Fall
