Surrey Civic Theatres 50th Gala & Concert with "BC World Music Collective"

Surrey Arts Centre14 Mar '18 @ 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM
  • Surrey Civic Theatres 50th Gala & Concert with
Surrey Civic Theatres turns 50 with a birthday bash March 14 at the Surrey Arts Centre celebrating the legacy and inspiration brought to the community and the artists who have graced its stages.

The evening begins with appetizers at a mix and reminisce reception, including photos and memorabilia from the last fifty years on display, and an opportunity to add your own story to the scrapbook. Starting the party is the global music “super group” BC World Music Collective—thirteen artists, both indigenous and from away, who now call BC home. From Brazil to Africa, Mexico to the Salish Sea, they treat the audience to a world music feast.

This ensemble is literally a who’s who of BC world music artists:  Adonis Puentes (JUNO winner, Grammy nominee), Celso Machado, Tonye Aganaba, Kurai Blessing, Tom Landa (JUNO winner, The Paperboys), Malcolm Aiken, Pedro Mota, Robin Layne, Liam MacDonald, Nick La Riviere, Kalissa Landa, Ronnie Swirl and First Nations (Stō: lo/St’át’imc/Nlaka’pamux Territories) rapper Ostwelve.

Their collaborative, high energy performance is an exuberant celebration of diversity. With percussion, guitars, bongos, trombone, jarana, pandeiro, fiddle, marimba, congas, bass, trumpet, and mbira, the musicians perform group numbers plus back each other as they sing their own songs and tell the stories of where they are from and how they got here.

The gala takes place at the Surrey Arts Centre, 13750 88 Avenue, starting at 6:30pm with the concert on the Main Stage at 8pm, Wednesday, March 14, 2018. Tickets are $29 - $49, including all fees. For advance tickets call Surrey Civic Theatres Box Office at 604-501-5566 or visit tickets.surrey.ca. Tickets will also be available at the door.
