Full Circle: First Nations Performance - Múyunstut Ta Slúlum Live Series presents NIMKISH

The Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street31 Aug '19 @ 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Part of the Múyunstut Ta Slúlum Live Series, Full Circle: First Nations Performance presents a concert celebrating the release of Heartbreak On The Coast, the debut EP recording by singer-songwriter Nimkish.

Joining Nimkish for a night of Indigenous/Queer music are JB The First Lady, Mamarudegyal, Biawanna, and DJ Paisley Eva. In addition to a great night of music, local artists will also be showcasing their work at the event and folks are invited to arrive early to mingle and browse vendor tables in advance of the concert.

NIMKISH Younging is an Indigenous/Queer artist based in Vancouver. Her sound is a smooth blend of pop and electronic with hints of R&B. The seven songs on Heartbreak On The Coast come from a personal place - about the trials of life and heartbreak. Her songs paint the picture of her experience, from beginning to end, of falling for somebody of the same sex for the first time. They tell her story of falling in love, treading new waters, the confusion, and eventually the pain of letting go. Nimkish hopes her stories and music will speak to people and says, "if even one person can relate to any one of these songs, then I'll be happy."
Nimkish will be sharing the evening with a group of talented music artists:

Mamarudegyal MTHC is a young mother and KRUMP dancer in Calgary’s Empirical Freedom Dance Crew. She represents many demographics and, motivated by injustice and inspired by diversity, strives to strengthen her community voice to make change in today’s world. She’s devoted to dance, to emceeing, to graffiti, and much more! Joining forces with Coast Salish duo, Status Krew in 2015, she started the indigenous hip hop and multimedia group Rudegang Entertainment, and released her debut EP MRG EP in 2016, taking home two Fraser Valley Music Awards (Best Hip Hop - Female, Queer Excellence in Music) in 2017. She has made quite a name for herself and has the BC hip hop scene waiting impatiently for her follow up album, currently in progress.

JB the FirstLady is a triple threat as an emcee, a director of performance, and an actor. She has performed at over 100 hip hop shows in and around Vancouver; from clubs to community organizations’ Annual General Meetings. JB is spreading the words of empowerment and the perspective of urban indigenous women in Canada. She was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, is 27 years old, and hails from the Nuxalk & Cayuga Nations. While having had the pleasure of living in different cities across Canada, she now calls East Vancouver home.

Biawanna is a Canadian vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer of indigenous Fijian and German descent. From the age of seven, they have been writing, mesmerizing crowds and polishing their silky-vocals-cheeky-lyrics combination. They have been in various bands and genres, from rock to electronic synth-pop and eventually R&B pop. They have placed “top 25” in CBC’s nationwide Searchlight contest, third in Live Act’s “Best in Vancouver” competition, second in CiTR Radio’s SHINDIG, and have showcased at the Vancouver Mural Festival as well as at the Vancouver Pride Festival. They are currently working on their debut EP which will include their single “Care”.

DJ Paisley Eva is from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation village of Eslha7an. At only 22 years old, Paisley Eva has become a force to be reckoned with in BC’s music industry. She started DJ’ing in Vancouver at 19 and soon afterwards founded Dame Music Society, an organization that trains self-identifying women, non-binary and trans folks to DJ vinyl in the effort to combat a white male-dominated industry. Beyond training, Paisley Eva DJ's on a weekly basis around Vancouver and travels regularly to play in Toronto and LA. She produces live shows with local and touring bands as well as other DJ nights in multiple venues across the city, including the wildly successful “Can I Kick It?” a throwback hip hop night featuring strictly Black and Indigenous DJs. Paisley Eva’s approach is creating more access and changing how shows get booked in Vancouver. Hers is a model of collective benefit rooted in Indigeneity with application across the creative sector.

The evening promises a great night of music, and a safe and celebratory space where folks can come together to support local artists and their work.
