Chan Centre Presents Roots Icon Rosanne Cash

Chan Centre for the Performing Arts 28 Sep '19 @ 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia presents the soulful, truth-telling vocals of Rosanne Cash on September 28, 2019 at 8pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. A beloved mainstay in the world of country music and Americana, Cash will perform songs from her latest album She Remembers Everything—an intimate, expressive collection that conveys a “vivid, haunting portrait on the blessings and bruises of life” (Pitchfork).

Bearing a legendary name but carving her own distinct path, New York City-based Cash has been writing songs and making music from the American heartland for four decades. Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1955, the eldest daughter of legendary country musician Johnny Cash was raised in California by her mother, Vivian Liberto. After high school she began touring with her father, kicking off her own musical career in the mid-70s as a guest artist on his records, and eventually releasing a self-titled debut album in 1978. True commercial success arrived in 1981 with the critically acclaimedSeven Year Ache, and more than a dozen influential albums have followed, featuring memorable songs with influences from blues to rock to folk. Her journey as an artist has evolved to include celebrated work as a published author, a sought-after collaborator and educator, and a renowned advocate for social justice.

For Cash, the timing of She Remembers Everything feels just right too. "There is a woman’s real life, complex experiences and layered understanding in these songs," she says. "I could not have written them 10 years ago—not even close. Time is shorter, I have more to say.” Following a trio of records that were more closely connected to her family heritage and southern roots, it marks a return to more personal songwriting for Cash. The album was produced by collaborator and partner John Leventhal and Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Mavis Staples, Neko Case), and features contributions from Elvis Costello, Kris Kristofferson, Colin Meloy, and Sam Phillips. The title track made “Best Songs of 2018” lists in The New York Times and Paste Magazine, and NPR proclaimed the album “Cash at the top of her game.”

Cash’s body of work includes 15 albums that have earned four Grammy awards, 21 top 40 hits and 11 No. 1 singles. She is an accomplished author and storyteller whose four books include best-selling memoir Composed, which the Chicago Tribune called “one of the best accounts of an American life you’ll likely ever read.” Her essays have appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and the Oxford-American. She also has an engaged following on Twitter, where her thoughtful, searing, often humorous 280-character ruminations on—amongst other things—American politics and culture, resonate deeply with the online community. In 2015, she was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, and in 2018 she was awarded with the Spirit of Americana: Free Speech Award and an honorary doctorate degree from the Berklee College of Music. She was a Resident Artistic Director at SFJAZZ in 2017/18, and is a creative partner at Carnegie Hall where she curates the American Byways series. Cash is a frequent guest lecturer in English and songwriting courses at several colleges including New York University, and is currently working on the lyrics for a new Broadway musical, Norma Rae, based on the 1979 film.
