Bringing Pili Nalike (Tiger Dance) from India to Canada

Preserving Heritage and Uniting Communities: Pili Nalike Vancouver Brings Pili Vesha to the Stage

In a vibrant fusion of tradition and celebration, the South Canara Association of Vancouver (SCAV) proudly presents Pili Vesha, also known as the Tiger Dance, at the upcoming Namaste Canada event on September 2nd, 2023, at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey.

Hailing from the picturesque coastal Karnataka region, this captivating dance form has transcended boundaries, captivating hearts, and uniting communities.

Originating in the coastal towns of Mangalore and Udupi, Pili Vesha, even though it originated as a celebration of Goddess Durga, is not just a dance—it's an emotion that knows no religious limits. Regardless of their faith, the people of Tulunad consider Pili Vesha a part of their identity, ingrained in their blood and emotions. Adorned in elaborate tiger costumes, dancers take to the streets, accompanied by rhythmic drumbeats and lively music. The energy and formations of the dance evoke awe and excitement, often gracing temple premises and popular public spaces.

The significance of showcasing Pili Vesha in Vancouver, Canada, goes beyond borders. This mesmerizing display is a profound commitment to preserving and promoting a cherished traditional art form. With every movement and beat, the dance aims to ignite a passion within the younger generation, connecting them to the rhythm of their cultural roots. Pili Vesha unites the Karnataka community in Vancouver, filling them with pride as they carry forward the hopes of their ancestors.

Under the banner of Pili Nalike Vancouver, the dance group is composed of exceptional individuals, each bringing their unique talents to the stage. The performers who will dazzle the audience include Yashaswi Mendon, Lucy Sequeira, Elton Dsouza, Divya Shetty (Sparrow), Glevin Andrade, Rahul Poojary, Sumit Kothiyal, Sadashiva Ashok, Anusha Dhananjaya, Ankish Ajith, Shifali Ashokkumar, Ashween Dara, Vinisha Albuquerque, Kruthika Salian, and Norbert Cutinho. The performing group is managed and supported by Su Shruthi and Josephine Chauhan.

This performance showcases a fusion version of the original dance, as the traditional moves are usually reserved for auspicious occasions. As the vibrant beats of Pili Vesha resonate in Vancouver, this performance bridges generations and continents. It invites the world to experience the profound emotions that reside within the soul of Coastal Karnataka, India. The event is not just a cultural display—it's a heartfelt pilgrimage that showcases the essence of tradition, devotion, unity, and the urgent message to save Tigers. The "Save the Tigers" banner proudly held on stage promotes the preservation of India's national animal, adding a meaningful layer to this remarkable enactment of humans in Tigers’ disguise.

In a world where cultural heritage can sometimes fade, the South Canara Association of Vancouver’s (SCAV) Pili Nalike group stands as a torchbearer, ensuring that the flame of Pili Vesha burns brightly across borders, connecting hearts and souls, and celebrating the rich tapestry of human expression.

“An event and act that cannot be missed.”
