The Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC) Society and the Surrey Board of Trade are hosting the Business of Culture Fundraiser, a dynamic evening of art, music, dance, food and great conversations focused on the positive impacts of the arts on business – especially in the development and support of local communities and social networks – which in turn benefit youth, tourism, economics and overall quality of life.
The program will begin with a cocktail reception, and live music by Lapis. Lapis pushes the edge of cultural hybridity as their sound is influenced by the traditional music of South Asia, Dub, Hip Hop and Electronic music. Lapis is comprised of sitarist Mohamed Assani, vocalist and electronic musician, Rup Sidhu and percussionist, Curtis Andrews. World-renowned artist, Jarnail Singh will also exhibit his work and will be followed by high-energy fusion dance performances by Shan-E-Punjab Arts Club, Jacky Yenga and Hardeep Sahota.
The evening will include an inspiring keynote address by Mo Dhaliwal, entrepreneur, advocate for the arts, and founder and former Director of VIBC, and a talk by Jocelyn Macdougall, development professional and singer in Vancouver’s hottest funk and Motown cover band, Queer as Funk. The fundraiser will conclude with a sit-down dinner and live music.
VIBC and the Surrey Board of Trade are dedicated to building and enriching the world we live in by connecting cultural communities, supporting local art initiatives, and creating opportunities for youth engagement through business, the arts, and education. All funds raised will power VIBC’s annual City of Bhangra Festival, June 11–18, 2016.
