On Saturday, April 12, four teams from the Vancouver Street Soccer League and the Southsiders will go head to head in an inaugural tournament. The Organizers hope that the event will blossom into a yearly tournament that will draw teams from across the Lower Mainland and BC
The tournament is a charitable event sponsored by the Southsiders, the largest organized supporters group in Canada, whose 1,200 members come together each week to cheer on the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Their goal is to raise funds and awareness for the VSSL, a non-profit organization, which uses soccer to inspire and empower homeless, mentally ill and at-risk youth and is made up of nine core teams affiliated with specific neighborhoods and shelters in Vancouver.
Brett Bird, the director of the Southsiders, believes that the tournament provides the perfect opportunity for the fan club to put their weight behind a meaningful cause.
“We want to give our Whitecaps a boost on the pitch with the atmosphere we bring, but beyond that we want to have a positive influence in our community. Partnering with groups such as Vancouver Street Soccer gives us the opportunity to do just that.” he says.
Four mixed teams will vie against each other at Andy Livingstone Park for a trophy in the four-hour
tournament. The public is welcome to watch the games and cheer the teams on.
