The Cultch presents New Cackle Sisters: Kitchen Chicken

York Theatre, 639 Commercial Drive02 Apr '19 to 06 Apr '19 @ 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

The Cultch is thrilled to welcome L’orchestre d’hommes-orchestres (Quebec) back to Vancouver with their new hit, New Cackle Sisters: Kitchen Chicken, playing April 2-6, 2019, at the York Theatre.

In New Cackle Sisters: Kitchen Chicken, the songs of the American ‘30s yodel queens, Mary Jane and Carolyn DeZurik, known as The Cackle Sisters, contend with the ovens for an improbable meal. Melodies made famous by the 1930s radios sensations are reborn in true L’orchestre d’hommes-orchestres form. The acts fly by at an astonishingly fast pace while the team hustles to roast a chicken, mash potatoes, and prepare appetizers—which may or may not eventually be served up—all while captivating audiences with the songs of The Cackle Sisters. An undisciplined ode to rural America, and the music of the incomparable DeZurik Sisters.

Award-winning company (The City of Toronto Glenn Gould Protégé Prize 2013, le Prix Ville de Québec 2015) L’orchestre d’hommes-orchestres enjoys taking risks on stage, intentionally provoking accidents, accentuating imbalances, and establishing a relationship with audiences that is raw and uncontrived. Each performance is an event that will never happen again. Vancouver audiences fell in love with L’orchestre d’hommes-orchestres Performs Tom Waits (2011) and Cabaret Brise-Jour (2014); LODHO’s unique reinventions of the repertoires of Tom Waits and Kurt Weill. In New Cackle Sisters: Kitchen Chicken, they take on the music of 30’s legends, Mary Jane and Carolyn DeZurik. Famous for saying, "we listened to the birds and tried to sing with the birds," the DeZurik sisters were two 1930’s Minnesota farm girls known for their distinctive style, inspired by their rural surroundings. They became favourite radio stars, regularly appearing on both the National Barn Dance and the Grand Ole Opry.
