Exit 22 Production’s 2018-2019 theatre season opens with a sparkling new adaptation for the stage of Jane Austen’s beloved novel, Sense and Sensibility.
Two very different sisters – Marianne, free-spirited and romantic, and Elinor, sensible and reserved – find themselves thrown into an unkind world when their father dies. Suddenly poor and made homeless by the rules of inheritance, Marianne and Elinor must leave their family estate with their mother and younger sister.
They are not in their new home long before Marianne falls in love with a man who appears to be a kindred spirit, but may be harbouring secrets of his own. Meanwhile, Elinor suffers how own heartbreak but conceals her true feelings, even from Marianne. In a world where rigid social conventions clash with impulses of the heart, Marianne and Elinor must navigate gossip and heartbreak before they can reconcile with each other and find happiness.
Renowned both as a classic novel and a celebrated film, playwright Michelle Deines brings this story to fresh life on the stage. She says: “I fell in love with Jane Austen because of her remarkable cast of characters. In every novel, her characters simply spring off the page, full of life and theatricality. They are at once loveable and infuriating; they are both exaggerated and true to life. And none of her heroes or heroines, however adored, are ever perfect. Her stories, while romantic and sparkling with wit, also have undercurrents of true loss, social satire, and a frustration with a society that severely restricted women’s autonomy.”
“Adapting a novel to a play is a little like writing a translation: you cannot write it word for word, but rather must somehow capture the spirit of the original work and render it into a different form. This is a challenging task. In writing this adaptation of Sense & Sensibility, I found myself returning again and again to the relationship between the two sisters, Elinor and Marianne. (Austen’s original title of the book was in fact Elinor & Marianne.) I have made their characters, their relationship, and how they transform one another, the heart of this play and in doing so, I hope I have managed to capture the spirit of this remarkable novel.”
Romantic, witty and heartfelt, Exit 22’s production of Sense & Sensibility is an enchanting comedy sure to entertain and delight.
