Arts Club Theatre Company’s A Thousand Splendid Suns

Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage12 Sep '19 to 13 Oct '19 @ 7:30 PM - 10:30 PM

The Arts Club’s 2019–2020 season opens at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage with A Thousand Splendid Suns, the hauntingly beautiful play by Ursula Rani Sarma based on the best-selling book by Khaled Hosseini. Following its run in Vancouver, the show will play at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in the spring.

In this sweeping tale set in war-torn Afghanistan, two women’s lives intersect through fate. The unlikely but extraordinary friendship of Laila (Anita Majumdar) and Mariam (Deena Aziz) helps them cope with the tyranny and tumult of life in 1990s Kabul—and leads them to an unforgettable act. A Thousand Splendid Suns, based on the best-selling novel by the author of The Kite Runner, is a haunting yet hopeful story that illuminates the strength of the human spirit.

The Arts Club’s production is based on the American Conservatory Theater’s production, which had its world premiere in San Francisco (co-presented with Theatre Calgary) in 2017 and became one of the best-selling shows in the A.C.T.’s history. Now featuring an all-Canadian cast with the original staging by Carey Perloff, it will be directed by Haysam Kadri, who starred in the original production.

Kadri says, “Performing in the premiere of Ursula Rani Sarma’s adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s masterful novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, was unquestionably a highlight in my career as an actor. As an actor in this play, it was my job to hold a mirror up and shine a light on a very dark world and to trust that our audience would be with me on the journey. Now as a director, being a part of shaping a story and finding the nuance from the other side of the table, it’s been my desire to step away from the story for some time to revisit why the play’s message carries such currency.”
