Arts Club Theatre Company presents The Sound of Music

Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage07 Nov '19 to 05 Jan '20 @ 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Few families have had greater influence on the entertainment industry than the von Trapps. Their story has been immortalized on both stage and screen, serving as the inspiration for the original 1959 Broadway production—which won five Tony Awards and ran for more than 1,400 performances—and the 1965 film, which proved so popular that it screened worldwide for nearly five years straight.

This winter, Vancouver’s Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage will be alive with The Sound of Music. The Arts Club is pleased to be producing this legendary musical, which features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is nice to consider this a return to Vancouver for the von Trapps, whose story likely graced the marquee of the Stanley during its movie theatre heyday.

One of the most powerful and romantic musicals of all time, The Sound of Music brims with beloved tunes such as “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and “Edelweiss.” Journey along with the spirited Maria (Synthia Yusuf), who takes a governess position with the von Trapp family, falling first for the children and then for the widower Captain von Trapp (Jonathan Winsby) himself, all against the stirring backdrop of pre-WWII Austria.

Audiences will sink into this cozy classic that is full of heartwarming moments, soaring vocals, and charming, familiar characters. They can even sing along with the performances on December 26 and January 4.

The Arts Club’s Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran will direct this production. She said, “This is the first time that the Arts Club has ever put on The Sound of Music, and I’m looking forward to directing such an iconic piece of musical theatre. It has been a lifelong favourite of mine, and I can’t wait to share our production with our audiences. I’m also so excited to collaborate with Synthia Yusuf and Jonathan Winsby, and am thrilled that Drew Facey’s set and costume designs have created a beautiful landscape for us to play upon!”
