After an enormously popular run last winter, Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley—a modern Pride and Prejudice sequel about the bookish middle child of the Bennets—returns to the Granville Island Stage.
The play is set after Lizzy Bennet (Lauren Jackson) has married Mr. Darcy (Chris Walters) and come to live on his grand estate. Joining them for the holidays are her pregnant elder sister, Jane (Leslie Dos Remedios), and Mr. Bingley (Tim Carlson); her youngest sister, Lydia (Amanda Testini); and Mary (Kate Dion-Richard), the often overlooked middle sister. While Mary starts to dream of a new life beyond her boisterous family, an unexpected visitor (Matthew MacDonald-Bain) at the Darcy household could spell romance.
The prolific and beloved Lauren Gunderson is the most-produced living playwright in the U.S., according to American Theatre magazine. Her play Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley was one of the top ten most-staged plays in 2017, and has even been embraced by the Jane Austen Society of North America.
Audiences will revel in this sparkling comic play that is full of seasonal felicity and pays tribute to its inspiration. In true Austen fashion, it is a story about family and finding love—but with a modern, subversive sensibility.
On this programming choice, Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran said, “I adore the wit, heart, romance, and comic sensibilities in Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon’s play. And, just like Jane Austen’s original work, there is a ribbon of feminism woven through this tale of love and partnership that I adore.”
